In a statement shared on the game’s Steam page, the developers expressed their heartfelt gratitude: “It’s difficult to articulate how much this means to us. Developing The Alters was an intensely personal endeavor, and witnessing so many of you engage with Jan’s narrative has been profoundly impactful. Your interest and support truly matter. Stay tuned for more exciting updates.”
Controversy Over AI Integration
Despite the warm reception from players and critics, a shadow was cast over 11 Bit Studios when it was revealed that generative AI tools were employed during the game’s development. The intent to later remove these AI elements without prior disclosure has raised concerns among the community.
Players initially flagged what they suspected to be AI-generated text present in background scenes. Furthermore, non-English-speaking gamers criticized the subtitles for films shown by the game’s protagonist, Jan, reporting poor translation quality that also appeared to stem from generative AI.
Following these revelations, 11 Bit Studios acknowledged their use of AI tools in the development process. They clarified that the AI-generated text was originally intended only as a placeholder and was never meant to appear in the final product. However, in terms of the translation issue, the studio explained that due to “extreme time constraints, ”they opted to use AI for localization at launch, with plans to involve professional translation services later for quality enhancement.
In a reflective statement, 11 Bit Studios admitted, “In hindsight, we recognize that this was not the best decision. Regardless of our choices, we should have communicated more transparently with you all.”This acknowledgment speaks to the importance of transparency in game development, particularly as the industry increasingly turns to AI technologies.
The ongoing discussion surrounding the integration of AI in gaming remains dynamic. It encapsulates a broader conversation about ethical practices and the balance between innovation and quality. As The Alters continues to resonate with players, the studio faces the challenge of navigating community expectations while planning future content updates.
