Nightdive Studios recently made waves in the gaming community with the announcement that System Shock 2: Enhanced Edition has now been rebranded as the System Shock 2: 25th Anniversary Remaster. The developer also excitedly revealed that the remaster will be available on the Nintendo Switch, marking a significant milestone as the first System Shock title to launch on a Nintendo platform.
Originally introduced by Nightdive Studios in August 2019 to celebrate the game’s 20th anniversary, the remaster faced a lengthy development period. Although it took nearly six years for progress to surface, recent updates indicate a revival of interest and activity surrounding the project.
On February 14, 2025, Nightdive Studios updated fans on the project’s status, confirming that the remaster’s title dropped the “Enhanced Edition”from its previous title. With the inclusion of the Nintendo Switch, gamers can also expect backward compatibility with the upcoming Switch 2, ensuring they can enjoy the game on future hardware.

Release Date Announcement for System Shock 2 Remaster in March 2025
Anticipation builds as Nightdive Studios has confirmed that the long-awaited release date for the System Shock 2: 25th Anniversary Remaster will be disclosed at the next Game Developers Conference (GDC) in March. The 2025 GDC will host its events from March 17 to 22, with the highly anticipated release date set to be revealed during the Future Game Show Spring Showcase livestream on March 20.
This timing suggests that the anticipated remaster may launch closer to the original game’s 26th anniversary rather than its 25th, aligning with the broader expectations of fans eager for immersive gameplay combined with the nostalgia of the iconic franchise.
While the lengthy development of the remaster remains somewhat unclear, it’s worth noting that Nightdive Studios has been quite occupied, launching five remastered titles in 2024 alone. This significant workload is quite impressive considering the studio operates with a team of around 40 employees as of 2025, based on LinkedIn data.
In addition to the Nintendo Switch, the System Shock 2: 25th Anniversary Remaster is slated for release on several platforms, including PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. However, details regarding pricing have yet to be announced. Much like its 1999 predecessor, this remaster is anticipated to attract fans of both immersive simulations and horror RPG-style games.
