Clair Obscur Expedition 33 Guide: Strategies to Defeat Chromatic Bourgeon

In Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, players encounter multiple optional Chromatic bosses, including the formidable Chromatic Bourgeon. While some of these bosses are available early in the game, Chromatic Bourgeon presents a challenge that only emerges as players approach the conclusion of Act 2.
Upon defeating this boss, players can receive a unique Bourgeon skin—an item that can easily go unnoticed unless you’re engaged in the white Nevron quests. Prior to entering battle, it’s essential to adequately prepare, as an unprepared assault can lead to a swift defeat.
If you’ve already encountered non-Chromatic Bourgeons, you may have an idea of what to expect. However, for those still having difficulty, here’s a comprehensive guide to triumphing over the Chromatic Bourgeon in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33.
Where to Locate Chromatic Bourgeon
The Chromatic Bourgeon is situated in the Tainted Waters area of Inside The Monolith.
To begin your journey, fast travel to the Tainted Waters Expedition Flag 70 checkpoint, then navigate to the left path. Make a left turn toward the red-glowing anchor on the ceiling. You’re on the right track if you see a giant ball accompanied by some naval mines.
As you progress downward, look for the Chromatic Bourgeon adorned with glowing blue sea kelp on its back. Initiate the encounter by attacking the Nevron.
Preparation for the Chromatic Bourgeon Encounter
The Chromatic Bourgeon has a vulnerability to Lightning attacks, making Lune a prime choice for this battle.
While Maelle and Verso also possess skills capable of delivering elemental damage, Lightning-based weapons will significantly enhance your chances of success, especially if utilized correctly.
Exercise caution in this fight, as one of Bourgeon’s main attacks can consume a party member, potentially leading to a team disadvantage. For instance, if Lune is incapacitated, ensure that Maelle and Verso are poised to continue the fight effectively.
To facilitate your preparation, here’s a list of suitable party members, their skill sets, and an overview of Chromatic Bourgeon’s attack repertoire:
Optimal Party Members
In my successful run, team members included Lune, Maelle, and Verso, all at levels 62, 64, and 67, respectively.
For Lune, I prioritized elemental skills such as Lightning Dance, Thunderfall, and Mayhem. Additionally, her support skills like Healing Light and Rebirth proved invaluable for sustaining team health. I equipped her with a level 15 weapon.
For Maelle, although I didn’t unlock her optimal weapon, I used a level 15 alternative. Skills like Sword Ballet, Gustave’s Homage, Swift Stride, and Rain of Fire were important for maximizing her damage response.
Maelle’s ideal weapon, Clierum, can be acquired by defeating Seething Boucheclier at Visages.
Lastly, for Verso, prioritize skills like Strike Storm, Assault Zero, Perfect Break, and Perfect Recovery. While his best weapons for this encounter are recommended, I made do with a level 32 option.

The Chromatic Bourgeon employs five distinct attacks, the most dangerous being its ability to consume an ally.
Here’s a detailed breakdown of every attack and recommended counters:
Attack Description Counteraction Eating an Ally The Chromatic Bourgeon consumes any of your allies, rendering them unusable until the boss is stunned or defeated. Break the Bourgeon’s Break bar to stun. 3-Hit Combo The boss performs a rapid three-hit attack, requiring quick parries to avoid damage. Be prepared to dodge or parry. 4-Hit Combo Initially slams its head on the character, then executes a 3-Hit Combo. Dodge or parry to minimize damage. Crushing Combo A sequence beginning with a 3-Hit Combo, concluding with a head slam. Evade or block attacks effectively. Miasma The boss launches green projectiles, applying the Exhaust debuff upon hits, which destabilizes your attack ability. Evade or parry cautiously.Strategies to Defeat the Chromatic Bourgeon
To efficiently defeat the Chromatic Bourgeon, focus on utilizing Lightning-based attacks. Lune’s capabilities are particularly crucial in this encounter.
At the start of your turn, use Thunderfall to strike the Chromatic Bourgeon, particularly if AP limits prevent the use of Lightning Dance. Subsequently, ensure you parry its assaults to build AP for forthcoming turns.
If Lune is not consumed, and adequate AP has been amassed, proceed with Lightning Dance. Alternatively, utilize Mayhem to maximize damage inflicted on the boss.
Should the Chromatic Bourgeon consume Lune, focus on maintaining team survival with Maelle and Verso to deal Break damage or conclude the fight directly.
Equip Lightning weapons on Maelle and Verso, as this is critical for optimizing damage output.
Using a higher-level weapon significantly surpasses lower-level options, even with elemental advantages. Therefore, ensure your weapons are sufficiently leveled.
Employ strategic parries and dodges to effectively mitigate damage. With persistent Lightning assaults and counterattacks, you should be able to deplete the boss’s HP and potentially break its bar.
