While navigating the charming town of Chorrol in Oblivion Remastered, you stumble upon a troubling story concerning a robbery at the castle. The esteemed Countess Arriana Valga has had a priceless heirloom pilfered. To assist her, visit Castle Chorrol during the day, ensuring the Countess is present, and engage her about the burglary.

During your conversation, she reveals that a cherished portrait of her late husband, the Count Valga, has been taken from her private quarters. This theft not only represents a severe intrusion into her life but also robs her of a deeply personal memento.

The Countess tasks you with the responsibility of investigating the theft, instructing you to gather clues and correctly identify the thief. A stern warning accompanies her plea: misidentifying the culprit could lead to dire consequences for you.

Canvas the Castle: A Comprehensive Quest Guide

Setting aside the Countess’s ominous warning, you agree to aid her. Begin your investigation by interviewing the castle’s residents and searching the premises for clues.

A total of four retainers await your questioning: Chanel and Orgnolf Hairy-Legs are stationed in the private quarters, instructed to remain there until the portrait is recovered.Bittneld, the guard captain, can typically be found patrolling the streets or inside the barracks. Lastly, the steward Orok gro-Groth will either be in the private area or at the Northern Goods and Trade, located near the fountain by the South Gate.

In addition, you may also interrogate Laythe Wavrick, the castle herald, who is typically near the Countess. He reveals that Orgnolf has developed a drinking problem and has been soliciting money for alcohol. Could he have stolen the painting to support his habit?

With this information, ascend to the private quarters and utilize your key to unlock the door despite its hard lock.

Before you can effectively question the suspects, you must gain their trust. This involves engaging in the Persuasion mini-game to increase their disposition toward you. Four tactics are available: Joke, Admire, Coerce, and Boast. Strategically select options that resonate positively with them when their disposition is high, and opt for less favored choices when it declines. You can gauge their reactions through visual cues on their faces, indicated by color-coded wedges.

Though it may take some practice, once you find your rhythm, you can achieve reliable success—even with low Speechcraft and Personality stats. Alternatively, you can opt for bribery if needed, but be prepared to spend gold, especially if your Persona score is low.

Start by entering Chanel’s quarters using your master key and engage her in conversation. While she’s initially unhelpful, after raising her disposition to 70, she discloses her whereabouts the night the painting was stolen: she had been in the courtyard observing the stars, then dining, and finally retired to her bed.

Next, head to the second half of the private area to speak with Orgnolf Hairy-Legs. If you are not cautious, you may find your inquiries met with disdain. You’ll have to build his disposition before he opens up. For him, jokes and coercion worked best; once you reach a disposition of 60, he reveals he was tasked with receiving a wine shipment that encountered issues due to the rain, causing him to go to bed after his troubles.

While still in the private quarters, locate Orok gro-Groth. His willingness to speak hinges on your rapport, so utilize the Persuasion mini-game again. He prefers jokes and boasting. Once you reach 60 disposition with him, Orok mentions that he did not see either Chanel or Orgnolf that night, but he did confirm that heavy rain would have complicated any attempts to transport the fragile painting.

After clearing up these details, head outside to interview Bittneld, the guard captain. Although he could be on patrol or at the barracks, I found him stationed near the Countess in the great hall. He informs you of a suspicious encounter with Chanel in the west tower, where she appeared to be practicing spells.

Before investigating the west tower, visit the dining hall adjacent to the throne room and check the paint-stained carpet in the far corner. Be sure to inspect both sections to notice paint on the floor as well as footprints—could these indicate Chanel’s movements during her meal?

Afterward, head back to the private area and utilize your compass to locate the door to the west tower. Behind some crates, you’ll uncover a trap door descending into a hidden chamber.

Inside, you will find an unusual painting, which adds another clue to your journal. Coupled with the paint trails from the dining room, you might conclude that Chanel is the secret artist—but to what end remains uncertain.

Now, you can examine the rooms of the two main suspects. In Orgnolf’s quarters, look through his personal chest and discover two fine bottles of wine—evidence that contradicts his story about broken bottles during delivery. This suggests he may have been enjoying a drink while the burglary occurred, casting doubt on his alibi!

Next, in Chanel’s room, open the lectern and uncover a stash of painting supplies, reinforcing her connection to the artwork in the west tower. With her disposition already above 70, you’re ready to confront her with your findings.

Your investigation leads to an undeniable truth: Chanel is the original artist of the portrait, and her infatuation with the late Count fueled jealousy towards the Countess. Following your confrontation, Chanel reluctantly returns the stolen portrait, confessing her guilt.

If she resists admitting her misdeed, ensure you have thoroughly engaged with the paint tracks in the dining area and the painting in the west tower. Your quest log confirms you have sufficiently gathered evidence when it indicates no further proof is necessary.

Deciding the Fate of Chanel: How to Conclude Canvas the Castle

At this juncture, you must make a critical choice: will you expose Chanel’s crime to the Countess for potential rewards, or will you decide to conceal the true criminal’s identity, allowing her to go free?

On one hand, revealing Chanel’s misdeeds seems disproportionately harsh for a crime rooted in obsession. On the flip side, her fixation on the Count and subsequent resentment towards the Countess has evidently become troubling.

From a personal standpoint, informing the Countess about Chanel’s actions secures a substantial reward of gold, alongside a selection of randomized flawless pearls and topaz gemstones—valuable additions for crafting or trading. Conversely, should you choose to overlook her crime, Chanel will offer a significantly smaller amount of gold and paint you a unique portrait as a form of gratitude, which enhances your player-owned house’s aesthetics.

Once you finalize your decision, return to the Countess. Confirming Chanel’s guilt leads to her banishment from the court, yet she avoids imprisonment. If you decide to protect Chanel, your quest log will remain open, eventually updating with a note about her gift six in-game weeks later.

Both outcomes have merit. If you are early in your adventure, the financial reward from the Countess can provide necessary assets. However, obtaining a one-of-a-kind ornament from Chanel can be equally enticing given its unique status.

Moreover, your handling of this case will impact your reputation in Cyrodiil. Achieving success in such a high-profile case enhances your Fame, while sheltering a criminal yields no rewards. A stellar reputation is imperative to acquiring a house in Chorrol—this factor might influence your final choice.

While in the area, consider undertaking additional side quests in Chorrol. You might visit The Grey Mare for a chance to acquire one of the best early-game weapons in Oblivion Remastered!
