[s]bwtv[/s]Releasing the Brood War TeleVision program (BWTV) will forever change the Starcraft community when it comes to events. It has already been estimated to have the same effect as the release of replays with the 1.08 patch back in February 2001!
But Blizzard's continuous release of new patches keeps on delaying the program's release!
» Lasgo, creator of various Starcraft utilities such as anti-hacking tools, loaders and the famous replay/vod-viewer called OP3, almost finished the project called BWTV for patch 1.10. As soon as 1.11 was released all his programs were put out of function. This is due to the changes Blizzard make with every new patch realeased for Battle.net.
» TravelToAiur explained the patching process like this:"Its like if you have 6 chairs in a row and then with a patch in the middle you add a 7th one, larger and different, and you cut a leg of one of the 6 older chairs. It's like if I have xyxyxy and after the patch I would have yxxxyxxyxx" The changes made to starcraft.exe with every new patch is an intentional move by Blizzard to put all the third hand programs out of function, including the tons of different maphacks out there.
Programs such as » BWChart and » BWScanner had to be updated once the patch was released in order to work again, and Lasgo said that "it would be nonsence to try to catch theirs patches with my updates". Furthermore he added "If 1.11b is the last patch as I hope I will start on my work to reestablish my program base again!"
BWTV works as a client reading from a server which is sending streaming information of a Starcraft replay. The dream of BWTV integrated with a shoutcast radio broadcast feature is what opens the most possibilities: anyone could host an event live with both video and audio commentators to it. This would open possibilities for mass observing and live, scheduled Starcraft events.
We look forward to the release of BWTV and will hopefully see a comeback to most of our events here at GosuGamers if the program holds up to our expectations.
