5 Best Tower Defense Games, Ranked

What are the best Tower Defense games of all time?

These perks are essential to crafting a run that suits both the layout of the map and your own unique strategies that can be fun to experiment with until you find the perfect combination. While all perks can be used to some extent, a handful are always going to be picked when starting a new game.

10 Power Tower

Close

Strongest on maps with fewer towers, Power Tower nearly triples the attack speed of towers you are closest to, making them extremely useful against all types of enemies. This can single-handedly protect you from waves that would otherwise destroy your castle.

However, this perk requires some pretty strategic positioning, meaning you shouldn't use this perk if you're focusing on a troop or auto-attack build, as you won't always be able to attack head-on. With a Sniper Tower and the Archer's Spire upgrade, you can even take out bosses with just one tower.

9 Ranged Damage

Close

Considering most weapons and buildings are ranged type attacks, Ranged Damage is a solid, overall buff that adds more damage when compared to the melee counterpart perk, which doesn't affect buildings. This makes it the most important perk for any ranged or tower build.

When you choose the ranged damage upgrade from the Royal Forge, your overall ranged damage will make sure you easily clear large groups of enemies. Just make sure your main weapon is a ranged attack for maximum effect.

8 Fortified Houses

Close

Better than Resilient Residences, Fortified Houses gives your moneymakers a chance to defend themselves, which is most useful early in the game when it's easy to lose gold and fall behind. Increasing their health also gives you a chance to protect them.

This also means that your houses can be affected by ranged upgrades at the Royal Forge or via other perks. On maps like Frostee, this perk is almost essential, as your houses are in the open and easily accessed by enemies on most waves.

7 Sustainable Mining

Close

One of the more underrated sources of profit, mines are best when you first build them but slowly lose gold each turn as they drain. Sustainable Mining not only makes them more valuable but will reset the gold counter every time they are destroyed.

This can be considered a requirement on maps that mostly use mines, such as Durststein, since every round you will almost surely lose at least one mine. This will also let you focus just on building mines so that you can save coins for walls and towers instead of farms and harbors.

6 Arcane Towers

Close

Unless you are focusing hard on making a troop build, towers will be your main defense throughout Thronefall, and Arcane Towers ensures that they are as viable as possible. The range and damage buff combined can turn otherwise weak upgrades into essential points of defense.

On maps like Uferwind, with a heavy amount of flying enemies, Arcane Towers will be the only thing standing between your castle and defeat, since your walls will be nearly useless. Sniper Towers make the best use of this perk, further increasing their already impressive range.

5 Warrior Training

Close

Weapon Training is an advancing perk that strengthens your main weapon attack every night until it is doubled in power by the last wave. This is essentially a requirement for builds focused on buffing your king, as it scales easily with other perks.

This perk is best used on weapons with splash damage, such as the Battle Axe, Shadow Codex, or Lightning Staff, since you are targeting multiple enemies and making the most of the damage buff. Otherwise, this will help you solo most waves, especially early in the game.

4 Castle Blueprints

Close

A simple perk that is still fairly effective, Castle Blueprints gives a flat 50 percent more health to towers and walls. Even with just one and a half times more health, your defenses will hold long enough for you to deplete hordes that would otherwise breakthrough.

On Frostee and Sturmflamm, this perk is most effective as your already few walls and towers fall rather quickly, leaving your castle center and houses exposed right away. Although this doesn't make you invincible, it gives you more than enough wiggle room to survive.

3 Treasure Hunter

Close

Usually you'll only want a single perk that is used for gold generation, and Treasure Hunter is your best option outside Sustainable Mining for when you aren't focusing on mines. This perk gives you a sizably increasing gold bonus for the last three nights, which can be a lifesaver.

Overall giving you an additional 85 gold, you can use this to give an initial upgrade to all of your towers, troops, explosive farms, or walls, rewarding you for surviving while sending you over the edge to victory. Just make sure your castle doesn't fall before the third-to-last night.

2 Lighter Materials

Close

Another essential perk for buffing your king's attacks, Lighter Materials makes your auto-attack 33 percent faster, which is strong enough to let you solo early waves and save money. Certain weapons are incredibly powerful with this perk, such as the Blood Wand or Shadow Codex.

This also scales nicely with certain castle upgrades that increase your attack power or attack speed, making you much stronger than otherwise possible. You can combine this perk with Spell Scroll to reduce your special ability cooldown, further strengthening your king's attacks.

1 Last Stand

Close

While on early levels, this perk is a bit overkill, later levels or ones with dangerous mutators attached can be saved with this perk alone. Last Stand is unique since it instantly revives all your towers when your castle is half destroyed.

This also includes the tower upgrades, and the final boss on Totend first targets all of your towers before focusing on your castle, allowing you to recover in a massive way. Despite having a niche use-case scenario, this is a solid back-pocket perk that can steal a victory from a loss.
