God Of War Ragnarok Was Never Going To Kill This Character

The God of War series has had many important characters die over the years. Deimos, Athena, Pandora, and Faye are just a few key examples, all of which shaped Kratos as a character and affected the overall story of the series. However, with God of War Ragnarok, Santa Monica Studio made sure that one character never met the same fate. Spoilers ahead for God of War Ragnarok
In a recent interview with The Washington Post, game director Eric Williams mentioned that killing Kratos was never an option. “Oh no, we did not consider killing Kratos for many reasons.” said Williams. The ending of God of War 2018 contained a prophecy on the walls at Jotunheim, which showed Atreus holding a dying Kratos in his arms, possibly hinting towards the end of Kratos’s journey in Ragnarok. However, that never happened as it was actually Odin who ended up in that position.

While Williams mentioned multiple reasons for choosing to continue Kratos’s journey, he said that the most important one was "that that’s not the story we’re trying to tell". That story is one of a "parent-child unit coming together and then becoming strong enough that they know each other, and they know that they made each other better, and that if you were to break them apart, you’d still feel like they’d be okay" he explained further.
Ragnarok’s ending definitely meant that this was not the end of Kratos’ journey, but it also didn’t reveal if we will see him and Atreus return for future titles, if there are any. Thanks to some hints in the 2018 game, most fans believe that the next God of War title will be set in the Egyptian pantheon.
When that will happen is a different question entirely as Cory Barlog has mentioned that Sony Santa Monica is already working on several different things already. One of them is also the recently announced God of War TV series in the works at Amazon, where Barlog will serve as the executive producer.
