Baldur's Gate 3 uses a rarity system similar to its Dungeons & Dragons counterpart, which usually means higher rarity items having the strongest effects in the game, while common and uncommon items suffer from excessive mundanity. However, some common items have the power to be more useful than rare or even very rare items.

Baldur's Gate 3: All Unique Spells

Baldur's Gate 3 offers a handful of truly unique spells to you, whether they're immensely powerful or not!

Although not all of these unexpectedly powerful common items are easy to find, or even obtain, they all have the quality of surpassing their expectations, giving you a solid chance of using them to save Baldur's Gate from the overwhelming threat of an illithid army.

8 Arrow Of Fire

Close

The Arrow of Fire is probably one of if not the most common arrow type you will find in Baldur's Gate 3, and you will be able to find a full stack from looting crates and enemies before you reach Act Two. Other than just buffing your ranged attack damage, you can also target multiple enemies and apply the Burning effect.

With how often you come across them, you should plan to use at least one per combat to get the full effect, and combining it with smokepowder barrels or oil surfaces can trigger explosive combos that make this arrow one of the most versatile tools in the game.

7 Arrow Of Acid

Close

Like the Arrow of Fire, the Arrow of Acid is among the most commonly found arrow types and while it has the chance to deal less damage than the fire arrow, you can still target multiple enemies and apply the Acid effect, reducing the target's Armor Class by 2.

This is a vital arrow to use against high AC or boss enemies, especially if you want important strikes to land, like Smite spells and the Monk's stun attacks. You can even use it to lay paths for enemies to walk over if they are too far away, allowing you to still gain the effect, which is worth sacrificing the damage.

6 Elixir Of Hill Giant Strength

  • Requires: Salts of Hill Giant Fingernail, Any Suspension

Although a step below the Elixir of Cloud Giant Strength, the Elixir of Hill Giant Strength is easier to find and craft, and will still grant any character a higher than max Strength score to buff one of the most necessary skills for both exploration, damage, and even dialogue checks.

Having a max Strength score can give your character farther jump distances, shove distances, attack damage and hit chance, carrying capacity, object interaction, and throw distance. It's especially useful in the first eight levels when you are unlikely to have any character with a max Strength score without using ability score increases.

5 Orthonic Handbomb

Close

The Orthonic Handbomb is one of the highest damage grenades in the game, and also one of the hardest to obtain, despite its rarity. To get the bombs, you need to engage combat with Yurgir in The Gauntlet of Shar. When he is low enough health, he will start throwing them in groups of ten to 12, allowing you to snatch them up before they explode.

If you are determined enough, you can lengthen the fight, keeping Yurgir barely alive while you quickly scoop up the dozens of bombs littering the ground and equipping yourself with Faerûn's deadliest arsenal of explosives. The Infernal Fire effect also allows you to burn enemies without the option for them to put themselves out.

4 Smokepowder Bomb

Close

The most iconic grenade of Baldur's Gate 3 is surprisingly easily available, as you can loot them from almost any type of crate and barrel, purchase from most traders, and loot from dozens of enemies. It's one of the easiest sources of high level damage and fun to watch go boom.

Because of this, you shouldn't shy from tossing them willy-nilly, especially if you see more than two enemies within Smokepowder range. The only thing you'll have to worry about is its high area of effect, as most enclosed spaces might include one or two of your own party members.

3 Void Bulb

Close

One of the three first grenades you can find, as early as the tutorial mission, the Void Bulb is an illithid grenade that has the simple effect of pulling all enemies within its area of effect to a point in the center of its radius with a satisfying whirl of purple energy.

With some creativity, this common grenade can be used to create encounter-winning scenarios, and if you're lucky, even send groups soaring over bridges and cliffs. Combined with any other grenade or elemental arrow, multiple characters or classes with multiple attacks will be able to make the best use of the almighty bulb.

2 Surprise-Based Teddy Bear

Close

Designed to explode refugee children, the Surprised-Based Teddy Bear is a grenade item you can find during the Investigate the Suspicious Toys quest, leading you to a box with a handful of fireworks-laced teddy bears.

Other than being one of the best looking effects in the game, they do a surprisingly high amount of damage with 6d6 fire damage, which is up to 15 more than a Smokepowder Bomb. The one issue is you only find a small handful in the first container they appear, so use them wisely.

1 Potion Of Superior Healing

  • Requires: Salts of Musk Creeper, Any Suspension

The Potion of Superior Healing, ironically, does not follow in the footsteps of Dungeons & Dragons, keeping this potion as a simple common item, despite having the second best healing effects of all the potions behind the Potion of Supreme Healing.

Despite lacking the punch of the Supreme potion, it is much easier to craft, still heals up to 40 hit points, and is far more common to find and cheaper to purchase. This potion is the single best way to heal otherwise, and will save you on using spell slots and actions in combat, and is even able to be thrown to heal multiple allies at once.
