Call of Duty is such a popular and prolific franchise that its sub-series have had reboots — and those reboots have gotten sequels. Such is the case with 2022's Modern Warfare 2. It's not a remake of Modern Warfare 2 from 2009, but instead a sequel to the Modern Warfare reboot from 2019.

Because it's a new plot that simply uses new versions of favorite characters from the older titles, we cannot be sure what the franchise will bring in the future. These new Modern Warfare titles have already differed greatly from what we knew from the prior Modern Warfare games, after all. This results in plenty of questions we have going forward about where the plot might go and what some of the events in this title might mean.

Needless to say, beware of spoilers below!

6 Does General Shepherd Have The Same Plan

If you played Modern Warfare 2 from 2009, you'll remember that Shepherd ended up partly orchestrating World War 3 in an attempt to revitalize the US military's might after the events of the first Modern Warfare. In the recent Modern Warfare 2, he simply makes a mistake and causes US weapons to end up in the wrong hands. His crime comes with his attempted cover-up.

By the time the credits roll, he is nowhere to be found. The question remains; will General Shepherd try to fan the flames of war once again? These newer titles try to remain more grounded, so it is harder to imagine a literal World War 3 breaking out in the next game.

5 What Is Makarov Planning?

It cannot be guaranteed that Vladimir Makarov's aims as the head of Russian ultranationalists are the same as they were in the 2009 game of the same name. However, he is certainly planning something big if the teaser at the end of the recent game's campaign is any indication.

Perhaps, instead of directly launching Russia into a war with the US, he will try to provoke Iran into an armed conflict with them. It would make Hassan's dying words about it not being an attack but an invasion excellent foreshadowing.

4 How Does Mexico Feel About The Attacks?

In this game, Mexico is portrayed as being completely overrun by drug cartels. Side by side with Alejandro and Rodolfo, you shoot your way through its army, which is in the pockets of El Sin Nombre, a drug dealer later revealed to be Valeria.

During the course of the campaign, you end up bombing a small village and engaging in gunfights throughout several towns. How will the Mexican government react to this event? Maybe this could be used as a plot point and become part of what Vladimir Makarov is planning in the future game.

3 Will There Be An Invasion Of The United States?

Modern Warfare 2 and 3 from 2009 and 2011, respectively, detail a fictional massive world war that turns major American cities and suburbs into battlefields. Will this be the case in the next direct sequel to this story? We likely won't find out for a couple of years because the developer teams of the series like to rotate to other sub-series after each launch.

With the tease at the end hinting at a recreation of the infamous "No Russian" mission from 2009's Modern Warfare 2, we simply cannot wait to see what happens next. Even if there is not another all-out war between Russia and the United States, whatever Makarov and his ultranationalist terrorists plan to do will likely change the world.

2 Are The Events Of 2019's Modern Warfare Important?

Except for returning characters, there is not a lot of connective tissue tying Modern Warfare 2 to 2019's Modern Warfare. The two plots are separate and there is little mention of what happened in the first entry of the reboot. Even some important characters from the first game like Farah and Nikolai are relegated to cameos in the newer entry.

It makes us wonder if the events of that title are important at all to understanding what will go on in the future. It's possible that a theoretical Modern Warfare 3 will tie the events of the two games together. For all we know, maybe Vladimir Makarov and Roman Barkov, the antagonist from the 2019 game, have a history, and the former is inspired to action by the latter's death.

1 Will The Teaser Be Modern Warfare 3 Or Resolved In Multiplayer

2019's Modern Warfare had an interesting tease that most likely would have made for a fine single-player campaign. However, the conflict surrounding Verdansk was the subject of the game's multiplayer portion and the free-to-play battle royale mode, Warzone.

The story ended with the destruction of the city so they weren't going to re-use the same plot for Modern Warfare 2's campaign, though whether the multiplayer is canon is also up for debate. One wonders, then, if the teaser involving Makarov will indeed be saved for a proper sequel or if it will be the impetus for ongoing seasons in the multiplayer mode and any updates for Warzone. It might even be used for a proper sequel to Warzone.
