Developer Claims Nintendo Switch 2 Software Constraints Like exFAT Support and Strict Certification May Delay Release
Software Constraints of Nintendo Switch 2 Outweigh Hardware Limitations
The potential of the Nintendo Switch 2 may be significantly hindered by software restrictions, many of which are also present in its predecessor, rather than by the technology itself. Matthew Cassells, founder of Alderon Games, shared insights during a recent episode of the Moore’s Law is Dead‘s Broken Silicon podcast, discussing the software challenges that could affect the gaming experience on the new console.
File System Limitations
One of the primary issues highlighted is the reliance on outdated file systems, namely FAT32 and exFAT, that the Nintendo Switch 2 shares with the original model. These file systems come with significant drawbacks, such as the 4GB file size restriction imposed by FAT32. This limitation can compel developers to reduce file sizes, ultimately affecting texture quality or necessitating the division of files into smaller segments. Cassells expressed confusion over Nintendo’s choice to stick with these antiquated systems, especially since they incur licensing fees to Microsoft with minimal advantages. In contrast, competitors like PlayStation utilize Linux-based file systems that do not face the same constraints.
Data Writing Restrictions
Beyond file size restrictions, Nintendo enforces additional limitations on the Nintendo Switch 2 that are absent on Sony and Microsoft consoles. Specifically, Nintendo imposes a strict cap on the number of times a game can write data to the NAND memory, a measure intended to prolong the lifespan of the memory. This policy is stringently monitored during the approval process for both new titles and updates. Cassells pointed out that this limitation stems from Nintendo’s choice of cost-effective NAND chips, raising questions about whether the reduced expenses justify the constraints imposed on developers. These challenges are further exacerbated by the system’s allocation of substantial resources toward the operating system and GameChat, along with heavy encryption and DRM measures, which align with Nintendo’s defensive approach to piracy and hacking.
Development Challenges
Another concern raised by Cassells is the insufficient availability of Nintendo Switch 2 development kits. As only a select group of developers have access to these kits, many creators are left guessing about how their games will perform on the new platform. This uncertainty can lead to increased complications when attempting to optimize games for the Switch 2.
