In the realm of optional bosses within Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, the Chromatic Orphelin stands out as a compelling challenge. This unique Chromatic Nevron can be found in a less explored area, making it easily overlooked by players.

When you confront this boss, be prepared: unlike other encounters, such as the Bourgeon found in Flying Waters, you will face three distinct adversaries in this battle. Each of them shares a singular vulnerability, so approaching this fight without proper preparation may lead to a swift defeat.

Whether your goal is to obtain the coveted weapon it drops, gain experience points (XP), or simply engage in combat, follow this guide on how to successfully defeat the Chromatic Orphelin in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33.

Locating the Chromatic Orphelin

The Chromatic Orphelin resides in Yellow Harvest. Although players can access this boss during the first Act, it’s essential to unlock Esquie first to bypass the rock obstacles shielding this area.

To reach Yellow Harvest, head northwest from the Hidden Gestral Arena. This region is identifiable by the massive stone creature above and the distinctive yellow grasslands at the entrance.

Venture through the area until you arrive at the third Expedition Flag 68. Progress along the visible path, and upon entering the open space, veer right towards the short cliffs. Ascend the ledges, and you’ll come across a tunnel to drop into.

After dropping down, take a right to discover three Nevrons engaged in some construction work. Initiate the battle by attacking them.

Preparation for the Chromatic Orphelin Fight

The trio of Chromatic Orphelin is particularly vulnerable to Earth-based damage. Thus, characters such as Lune or any heroes wielding Earth elemental weaponry are ideal choices for this confrontation.

However, knowledge of their weaknesses does not diminish the threat they pose. This boss employs devastating attacks specializing in Blight—a status effect that reduces a player’s maximum HP by 10%, and it can accumulate if left untreated.

Moreover, beware of a lethal attack capable of eliminating characters in a single blow. Below are recommended party members to bring, along with their skills and the enemy’s attack patterns:

Optimal Party Composition

For my encounter during Act 2, my party included Lune, Verso, and Maelle at levels 22, 21, and 21, respectively.

Beginning with Lune, ensure she acquires the essential skills: Rockslide, Earth Rising, Healing Light, and Rebirth. The first two abilities will aim for dealing damage to the trio, while Healing Light and Rebirth will help in negating Blight and reviving fallen party members.

Verso can also equip a weapon that inflicts Earth damage, obtainable as a drop from the Gault enemies encountered in Yellow Harvest. Using skills such as Assault Zero, From Fire, and Marking Shot, especially with the right weapon, can effectively control the battlefield.

Lastly, Maelle, equipped with a weapon obtainable from defeating Glaise, can make strategic contributions with skills like Percée, Rain of Fire, and Degagement, even without direct Earth abilities.

Maelle can utilize items during her turns for healing, restoring energy, or reviving allies when necessary.

Overview of Chromatic Orphelin Attacks

The Chromatic Orphelin executes four distinctive moves, with one being prevalent among all three adversaries while the others remain unique:

Attack Description Action Spin Attack The enemy rotates towards you while wielding its weapon. Time your parry correctly on the fourth spin, or risk catastrophic damage. Dodge or Parry 2-Hit Tong Plier Combo Features backhand strikes in quick succession, starting overhead. Dodge or Parry 3-Hit Spoon Combo Employs three consecutive spoon strikes, mixing high and low attacks. Dodge or Parry 3-Hit Hammer Combo Consists of three overhead strikes in a set, providing ample opportunity to evade or counter. Dodge or Parry

A direct hit from any of these attacks can inflict the Blight debuff. Swift healing is crucial; delaying treatment exacerbates the situation by diminishing maximum health.

Strategies for Defeating the Chromatic Orphelin

Your first move should be to unleash Lune’sEarth Rising or Rockslide whenever possible. Although Rockslide delivers higher damage, the AoE of Earth Rising can be useful if you lack equipment choices.

Prioritize preserving Lune’s survival, as her Earth elemental attacks are vital throughout this clash. Allocating turns for healing or reviving Lune is not only strategic but pivotal to achieving victory.

Furthermore, actively parry enemy strikes—this becomes increasingly important based on the point in the game you decide to tackle this challenge.

Employ Verso‘s Marking Shot to apply the Mark debuff, which raises deals additional damage if you’ve secured the right weapon. An equivalent strategy can be executed with Maelle‘s Defenceless ability, reducing enemy defenses significantly.

Beware of the Chromatic Orphelin’s Spin attack. If you witness this for the first time, attempt to dodge instead of block to familiarize yourself with its timing.

Continue to assault the Chromatic Orphelin with Earth damage and timed counters, and you will whittle down its health steadily.

Rewards from Defeating the Chromatic Orphelin

Upon vanquishing the Chromatic Orphelin, players can expect the following rewards:

  • 54, 429 XP
