Chris Wilson, Co-Director of Path of Exile, Exits Grinding Gear Games

Chris Wilson Steps Down from Grinding Gear Games: What It Means for Path of Exile
Recent filings from the New Zealand Companies Office reveal that Chris Wilson, Co-Director of Grinding Gear Games, has departed the company he co-founded in 2006. His position as Managing Director officially ended on January 21, 2025, yet this transition has not been publicly acknowledged by the studio, which has recently entered the Early Access phase of the highly anticipated Path of Exile 2.
Community Concerns Over Wilson’s Departure
Despite the lack of an official statement regarding Wilson’s exit, concerns have been echoed by the Path of Exile player community. His absence from the forums is notable, as many community members have been vocal about their concerns for the game’s future. Players feel that without Wilson’s guidance, the first installment is experiencing a downturn, especially in light of recent updates pertaining to the original game’s development priorities.
Wilson’s Role and Legacy in Path of Exile
Chris Wilson has been integral to the franchise, co-directing the original Path of Exile alongside Mark Roberts. Although he did not contribute to the direction of Path of Exile 2, he remained a prominent figure, actively engaging with both the development teams and the player base regarding ongoing updates. His reputation for addressing community issues head-on was evident during controversies, such as those concerning early access for streamers.
The Evolution of Path of Exile and Recent Developments
Since its launch in 2013, Wilson has articulated a vision for Path of Exile that emphasizes longevity and community engagement. At GDC 2019, he discussed strategies aimed at ensuring the game’s eternal appeal, which has now become a hallmark of its design philosophy.
Grinding Gear Games has been diligently working on Path of Exile 2, which began its Early Access journey in December 2024, available on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. The game has already gained tremendous popularity, setting records on Steam, rivaling titles like Marvel Rivals. Numerous updates have followed its release, positioning the game favorably ahead of its full launch planned for May.
The Future of Grinding Gear Games and Path of Exile
Initially conceived as a standalone narrative experience, Path of Exile 2 has expanded significantly, morphing into a comprehensive addition to the franchise that has resonated well with the gaming community.
The question remains whether Grinding Gear Games will formally announce Chris Wilson’s departure, or if Wilson himself will choose to make a public statement. As the development of Path of Exile 2 progresses, the studio faces the challenge of maintaining player trust and interest amidst these changes.
