Microsoft Pauses Development of Xbox Handheld Console

Recent reports from Windows Central indicate that Microsoft has temporarily shelved its plans for an Xbox handheld device that was set to accompany the successor to the Xbox Series X. This decision appears to have no impact on third-party handheld devices, such as one currently in development by Asus, which is anticipated to launch in late 2025.

Prioritizing Windows 11 Gaming Performance

Microsoft’s shift in focus is strategically aimed at enhancing the gaming capabilities of Windows 11 in the handheld market, particularly as it faces stiff competition from SteamOS. Although they have not entirely abandoned the idea of a dedicated Xbox handheld, the company is now prioritizing software improvements that will serve as the foundation for the potential device, thereby delaying any hardware development.

Impact on Launch Timeline

This pivot could result in a postponement of the previously speculated launch timeline for the Xbox handheld, which was rumored to debut in 2027 alongside the new generation of Xbox consoles. While the specific details remain unclear, the adjustments in strategy suggest a more cautious approach to hardware development.

Project Kennan Leaks and Specifications Under Discussion

Notable developments regarding Project Kennan, the codename for the upcoming handheld, were highlighted earlier this month following a leak from the United States Federal Communications Commission (FCC).Initial specs indicated that the device would be powered by AMD’s AERITH Plus, featuring a quad-core CPU, 16GB of RAM, and a thermal design power (TDP) of 20 watts. However, there’s speculation that the handheld may instead utilize the more advanced AMD Ryzen Z2 Extreme processor, though confirmation on this detail is still pending.

Upcoming Xbox Game Showcase

Fans are eager to see whether the Xbox handheld will make an appearance during the upcoming Xbox Game Showcase, scheduled for June 8 at 10 AM Pacific Time / 1 PM Eastern Time / 6 PM British Time. While hardware news might remain elusive, gamers can expect exciting announcements, trailers, and gameplay footage for anticipated titles such as Gears of War: E-Day, Fable, Clockwork Revolution, and others. Additionally, a follow-up Direct-style presentation will focus on Obsidian’s The Outer Worlds 2, promising an engaging event for the Xbox community.
