The Last of Us Part II Introduces New Chronological Story Mode

Naughty Dog’s critically acclaimed action-adventure title, The Last of Us Part II, is lauded for its engaging narrative depth. The game originally presents its extensive storyline through a non-linear format, allowing players to navigate between key characters and varying timeframes that shift from past to present. Recently, the studio announced a significant enhancement to the narrative experience with the launch of a new gameplay option.

What is the Chronological Mode?

Today, Naughty Dog unveiled the Chronological mode, which, as the name suggests, rearranges the storyline to follow a linear progression from beginning to end. This design choice was implemented to explore how the story might resonate with players without the original’s time jumps. According to the team, this new format aligns with their goal of enhancing storytelling and reveals a fresh perspective on the game’s events.

“Through the new Chronological mode, we believe players will gain even deeper insight into Part II’s narrative, ”notes Naughty Dog in a blog post announcing the feature.“Players will be able to see how Ellie being gifted a guitar flows so neatly into her learning to play, for example, while the journey through Seattle will showcase the fascinating parallels between Ellie and Abby’s crisscrossing journeys. You’ll see just how close they come into running into each other, how their actions impact each other, and more.”

A Collaborative Update

This free update is a collaborative effort between Naughty Dog and Nixxes, designed to provide players with an enriched gaming experience. While new players are still encouraged to appreciate the original non-linear storyline for its artistic merits, returning players may find this fresh option reinvigorating their connection to the game’s plot.

Rewards for Participation

Completing the game in Chronological mode unlocks exclusive rewards: players can dress Joel as Nathan Drake and Tommy as Sam Drake, characters from Naughty Dog’s Uncharted series. These skins are available for use in the game’s No Return roguelike survival mode, adding another layer of excitement for fans.

Availability on Platforms

The Last of Us Part II Remastered’s Chronological mode is now live for PlayStation 5 and PC users on both the Steam and Epic Games Store. This update is not only a pivotal shift in gameplay but also brings additional achievements and crucial bug fixes, further enhancing the player experience.
