Bungie Delays Marathon Release, New Launch Date Expected This Fall

Delay in Bungie’s Upcoming Shooter Marathon
Bungie has officially announced a delay for the highly anticipated shooter, Marathon, pushing its initial release date from September 23, 2025. While a new launch date has not been provided, players can expect to receive an update on the game’s progress and an anticipated timeline later this fall.
Communication with Players
The announcement was made through a blog post from the Marathon development team, marking the most substantial player engagement since a recent livestream. This interaction followed revelations that a former artist on the Marathon team had utilized assets from artist Antireal without her consent.
Insights from the Development Team
“Thank you not only for your passionate feedback around the Marathon reveal and Alpha playtest, but also for your patience while we took the time to listen closely and chart our next steps, ”Bungie stated in their blog.
The studio further elaborated, emphasizing the importance of player feedback: “Through every comment and real-time conversation on social media and Discord, your voice has been strong and clear. We’ve taken this to heart, and we know we need more time to craft Marathon into the game that truly reflects your passion. After much discussion within our Dev team, we’ve made the decision to delay the September 23rd release.”
Focusing on Gameplay Enhancements
According to Bungie’s post, the delay will allow them to enhance various aspects of the game, specifically targeting key areas to elevate the player experience. The development team plans to:
- Enhance survival gameplay by incorporating “more channeling and engaging AI encounters.”
- Create “more rewarding runs”with new types of loot and dynamic events.
- Make combat more tense and strategic.
Expanding the Marathon Universe
Bungie intends to delve deeper into the Marathon universe, promising:
- Increased visual fidelity and enhancements.
- More narrative and environmental storytelling elements for discovery and interaction.
- A darker tone that honors themes from the original trilogy.
Additionally, the studio plans to cater to solo and duo players better, which includes the implementation of proximity chat support.
“You’ll hear from us again later this Fall when we can share the progress we’ve made, alongside the game’s new release date, ”Bungie concluded.“Thank you again for your patience and – much more importantly – your passion. Your continued feedback will help us make Marathon the incredible gaming experience we all know it can be.”
Anticipating Future Updates
The delay, though disappointing, was not entirely unexpected. There had been indications of potential marketing setbacks, and the revelations about art assets further suggested the necessity for extensive reworking to replace any compromised elements.
As fall approaches, players hope for positive updates regarding Marathon, rather than discovering further complications in its development journey.
