Unraveling the Display Limitations of the Nintendo Switch 2

A recent comprehensive review has shed light on the Nintendo Switch 2’s display performance, indicating that it falls short of expectations for High Dynamic Range (HDR) viewing. According to insights provided by GamingTech, detailed investigations reveal that the maximum peak brightness reaches a mere 400 to 450 nits, which significantly impacts the visual experience.

Performance in Popular Titles

Notably, when exploring the vibrant world of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, the display achieved a peak brightness of approximately 420 nits. In contrast, Cyberpunk 2077 exhibited a slightly higher brightness level, capped at 450 nits. This brightness level is inadequate for an authentic HDR experience, especially considering the limitations of the LCD technology, which struggles with true black representation due to inherent backlighting issues. The constant rise in black levels—registering at 0.5 nits—further exacerbates these challenges.

Docked Mode HDR Performance

In docked mode, the Nintendo Switch 2 does display slightly improved HDR support. The system’s calibration is deemed sufficient, delivering an experience that aligns more closely with those seen on other console versions of Cyberpunk 2077. However, titles like Zelda: Breath of the Wild still fall short, resulting in a notably washed-out appearance characterized by a lack of contrast.
