Day 1 Update Required for Early Nintendo Switch 2 Units to Play Games

Reports have surfaced that individuals fortunate enough to acquire a Nintendo Switch 2 ahead of its official launch will find themselves with a device that serves little purpose until its crucial day one update is released. This information comes from various online sources, including a statement by Wario64 on X, which referenced an unboxing video that has since been removed but preserved by Culture Crave.
A user who received an early version of the console stated that the device is unable to run any games—neither titles from the original Switch nor those designed for the Switch 2—without first downloading this update. Unfortunately, the update function will not be available until June 5th, the date marking the system’s global launch.
Another person shared with me that they have a Nintendo Switch 2 as well. I have no permission to post pics but can share that when they try to boot a Switch 1 game, a message prompts “Please connect to the internet and update your system.”

While this news may be disappointing to early adopters, it is unlikely to affect the anticipated popularity of the Nintendo Switch 2. Set to launch on June 5th, the console will feature a robust lineup of games that are expected to enhance its appeal. Notable titles such as Mario Kart World are anticipated to introduce innovative features like a reverse track mode, as hinted at in recent gameplay footage. Additionally, several renowned third-party games, including Cyberpunk 2077, Hogwarts Legacy, and others are set to be part of the launch, showcasing the console’s capabilities.
Looking ahead, the future appears promising for the Nintendo Switch 2, with exciting releases on the horizon such as Donkey Kong Bananza and Metroid Prime 4: Echoes, which are rumored to arrive in 2026 and later. These upcoming titles are expected to leverage the system’s resources effectively for improved visuals and performance compared to the launch window games.
