Infernus is one of the most beginner-friendly characters in Deadlock, offering players a simple ranged character themed on burning enemies to death. The character has a varied kit, offering chasing, escape, and a key combo to enhance damage as much as possible. This Infernus build guide will walk you through what skills to prioritise and optimal item builds to make quick work of enemies.

Infernus skill build order

Understanding Infernus’s skill priority helps you get more damage out of this character:

  • Max 3 – Afterburn
  • Max 1 – Catalyst
  • Max 2 – Flame Dash
  • Max 4 – Concussive Combustion

Afterburn is your core skill. Infernus is all about damage-over-time, and so synergises with spirit and weapon bleed effects. Your first skill, Catalyst, also enhances damage, which further buffs your weapon and spirit damage from your Afterbrun. It also serves as a slow for defensive needs from melee pushers or wave control.

Afterburn will also combo with items like Ricochet and Toxic Bullets, making your two core item spike incredibly strong.

Flame Dash is a wave control skill and an escape tool. You’re a squishy carry, so upgrading this grants more cooldown and fire rate, which is handy for defensive situations. This gets more valuable when the enemy starts unlocking a higher fire rate hence the late level up.

Lastly, max your fourth skill, Concussive Combustion, last and when you can. You only need one point on it early to get the large cooldown reduction. The rest can come later on. This is big for team fights where you need enemies to disengage from you or you get caught laning. The stun then gives you time to Afterburn stack, apply the debuff with Catalyst, and escape with Flame Dash.

Item build for Infernus

This section covers the general early game build, and then key core items:

  • Early Game – Basic magazine / Extra Spirit. Enduring Spirit is fine if you’re in a rough lane matchup and need early spirit life steal.
  • Mid Game – Duration Extender > Superior Duration – Upgrade your Afterburn, Burstfire
  • Core Weapon items – Ricochet, Burst Fire, Toxic Bullets
  • Core Defensive items – Leech

As you get Core items, Toxic Bullets help add more DoT damage to your build and leave behind anti-healing effects. Ricochet is your main team fighting and wave-clearing item. This is a must-buy as Infernus’ main core item.

The general idea of the build is that Infernus is a DoT character. The skills are there to ramp DoT on your target with Afterburn. Afterburn deals about 23 damage at max rank, and as you get more Spirit, the damage increases. You’ll find your gun does most of the damage, but the ticks per second, with Spirit buffs and duration extension help a lot. It’s also good against tank characters, too, as the DoT can wither away their HP as you flee bruisers, assassins, or melt tanks away. If you need a defensive, you want Leech. Leech is a strong item that grants life steal from both your gun and Spirit. This will apply to your weapon damage and your burns.

Superior Duration is your fourth core item. The duration improvement skill on your Afterburn takes the duration to 5.28 seconds. The Duration Extender adds .64 seconds to the DoT. It’s important as the Afterburn ticks twice a second, so each upgrade grants you an extra tick. It also gives slightly better HP and weapon damage, which further amplifies your already bolstered stats. If you’re ahead, Burst Fire is a good purchase option. The added fire rate and move speed are great for playing ahead, as you can easily use it to escape, chase targets, and ramp your Afterburn.

With this build, you should find that the Afterburn damage eventually scales over your weapon damage. Target priority is important for the Afterburn to correctly deal damage. For team fights and wave clear, weapon damage helps the early spread since Ricochet effects are weak. But you’re still dishing out around half of a full magazine’s worth of damage against clumped targets. Ricochet and Afterburn are a very strong combo.
