Sometimes, when exploring, you'll come across a safe or other locked container in 7 Days To Die. You can break it open without destroying the container and losing all its loot, but this takes a long time, especially with lower-tier tools. If you find one, you're better off using Lockpicks to open it up.
Related7 Days To Die: Attributes, Ranked
7 Days To Die has different attributes, but based on your playstyle, you'll want to invest in the best one for you.
PostsWhile you can occasionally find Lockpicks in lootables like sports bags and purses, you can end up quickly burning through them trying to unlock something, even with investments in the Lockpicking skill. We'll tell you how to craft them, and what you can use them to unlock.
How To Craft Lockpicks
To craft Lockpicks and keep a good supply of them on hand, you'll need to have access to both a Forge and a Workbenchfor the crafting itself and to have read at least 15 Forge Ahead magazines to unlock the recipe for Lockpicks.
Lockpicks can be made at the Workbench in the Tools tab, and each one you craft takes one Forged Iron and one Mechanical Parts. Forged Iron can be looted from things like Working Stiff boxes, but it's easiest to make it yourself in a Forge with 12 smelted Iron and six smelted Clay.
You can also occasionally find Lockpicks, as well as Forged Iron and Mechanical Parts, for sale at a trader, usually at later-game ones like Jen, Bob, or Hugh.
For Mechanical Parts, you can easily obtain them by breaking down cars and mechanical items with a Wrench or finding them occasionally in lootables like toolboxes and destroyed Workbenches.
How To Use Lockpicks
Lockpicks are used exclusively to unlock special locked lootable containers, and can't be used to unlock any type of locked door. Some of the lootables they can be used on include:
- Gun safes.
- Desk or Wall safes.
- Police cars.
- Reinforced Chests.
- Locked Footlockers.
When you get a prompt to unlock the container after approaching it, pressInteract on the locked containerif you have Lockpicks in your inventory.
You will begin picking the lock, which will take 19.2 secondswithout any investment in the Lock Picking skill. If you invest in the Lock Picking skill, you can drastically reduce the time spent lockpicking:
Lock Picking Level
Time Spent Lockpicking
Level 1
16.6 Seconds
Level 2
11.2 Seconds
Level 3
7.4 Seconds
Investing in the Lock Picking skill also reduces the chances that your Lockpicks will break by ten percent at each level.
During the process, you have to stay still as the timer goes down until you complete the lockpicking or your lockpick breaks.
If the lockpick does break or an enemy interrupts you, the process will halt, and your progress will reset byaround three to four seconds, depending on the time you had left, but you can immediately start again with another.
If you run out of lockpicks while trying to break into a locked container, you can just break open the container with a tool, but this takes a very long time and will potentially draw zombies.
