If you enjoy sports games, especially ones based around skateboarding and Tony Hawk, you'll find enjoyment as you play Wave Break. The game takes inspiration from popular sports games, emphasizing tricks, exploring areas, and aiming for higher scores. You'll have plenty of tasks to try and different ways to make it through the campaign, opening multiple opportunities.

However, learning the different tricks and mastering the controls can quickly become complicated. Since beginners can find the game challenging and struggle to chain combos, you'll want to learn the best tips available. Ensure you think about the game, go through those tips, and learn how to ride the waves and score points.
Understand Your Movement Options
Even though the tutorial teaches you the basics for movement and performing moves, you won't learn all the movement options. Since you need to make challenging jumps and get around the area, you'll want to keep various tips in mind.
Movement Tip
How It Helps
Hold the jump button before you hold the gas button.
You need to charge your jump button before you can reach areas. If you charge your jump before you move toward the place you want to hop, you'll make it easier to reach.
Don't hold the jump or gas buttons if you need to turn toward a new direction.
Sometimes, you'll want to turn in place to aim for a new location. You may want to hold jump or the gas button, but doing so will cut your turning speed in half.
Use grinding to get on ledges and jump to new areas.
If you approach a half-pipe and try to jump off it, you'll go straight into the air to perform a trick. Instead, grind on the pipe and jump off it to reach different areas.
If you fall off your vehicle, you can time a button press to get back on immediately.
If you time it, you'll save time since you don't have to return to your vehicle. On top of that, you can press a button to return the boat to you.
You'll get a feel for the movement as you keep playing, but the above tips will help you complete tasks and make your way to specific locations without becoming frustrated with the controls.
Explore A New Map
Every time you go to a new area, you'll have a list of tasks to accomplish, with some consistent ones.
- Collecting the letters BREAK and COMBO.
- Collecting cash and a different collectible in each level.
- Scoring points by performing tricks.
- Getting the secret tape.
Since the levels are large and have plenty of space, you'll want to explore the map and get a feel for it. Feel free to try tricks at different locations where it looks like you can chain them. You should also look for the various collectibles since they'll stand out, and some have a glow. From there, you can develop paths to determine how you want to approach the level and its tasks.
You always spawn in the same spot, so you can easily create an ideal path for building combos or getting the collectibles.

Build Combos With Grinds And Automatics
While completing the score challenges will remain easy during the first level, you'll find the higher ones more challenging to reach. Some sports games will let you go back and forth in a half-pipe with an automatic to build your combos. However, that approach doesn't work in Wave Break, so you'll want to follow different steps to create large combos.
- Start by going into a grind or jumping from a height to use a flip into a grind.
- Jump to a new grind or go into an automatic to reach the next rail.
- Keep connecting the grinds and automatics until you run out of rails. You can end the combo with a wall plant, grab, or flip.
Combos become as large as possible when you incorporate multiple tricks, so hold different directions while you grind. If you go for a grab at the end, spin while you do it to boost your score.
Don't be afraid to restart a level if you mess up your combo. Losing that much time from a long combo can prevent you from reaching high scores. You should also end a combo early if you get too close to losing your balance. Keeping those points matters more than risking your run.
Go To The Gym
As you complete challenges and play the game, you'll collect money. While you could spend it on new boat designs and outfits, you must focus on upgrades at the gym. If you plan to make the game easier while offering more opportunities for bigger combos, you should focus on particular upgrades.
The Upgrade
What It Does
Why It Matters
Jump
Increases your jumping height.
You can reach higher areas while giving yourself more air time to perform tricks.
Turn
Increases your turning speed.
You'll make it easier to navigate the map since you can turn quicker to reach collectibles.
Automatics
Makes it easier to maintain your balance while doing an automatic.
You'll need to use automatics to connect your moves, so maintaining them for as long as possible will help you with combos.
Grinds
Makes it easier to balance while you do a grind.
Since you'll connect grinds with automatics, having good balance while grinding will help you with combos.
Spin
Makes you spin faster.
Since spinning helps you score more points during a grab, you'll want to max this out.
Since the campaign mode requires you to play as the bear, you should focus your gym upgrades on him. You'll also get cash for playing levels, even if you don't finish tasks.

Focus On A Single Task
You have three minutes to tackle various tasks, so ensure you tackle one task at a time. For example, if you want to focus on your score, work on it at the beginning before you try other tasks. You may see cash and other collectibles while you work, but you must collect them in a single run since you must recollect them if you don't get them all.
The same applies to other tasks, like those given to you by NPCs. While you explore the area or try objectives, see if you can find the character since they'll offer you three different tasks. These work well since they give you a fair amount of money while having simple tasks. For example, you may need to hop over a barrier or perform some grinds.
You don't have to complete the three NPC missions in one go, so feel free to end the run if you don't think you have enough time for the second or third task.
Don't Stay In One Level
Some sports games let you stay in one level and finish tasks to unlock more levels. However, you'll find Wave Break easier if you go to new levels and try them. While you can use the previous levels to earn more money through easier tasks, you shouldn't focus on them if you want to unlock everything.
The game has a meter you'll see after you complete tasks that lets you know when you unlock the next level. You should move to the next level, complete tasks there, and watch the meter quickly fill up, so you'll unlock more levels. Not only will you get more levels, but you'll have opportunities to make more money. You can then return to previous levels with your gym upgrades to make the various tasks easier.
