Until you upgrade to a better fishing rod, you may find that some fish will escape, no matter how skilled you are at managing the line. This is normal for beginners and part of the learning curve, though the fishing mechanics aren't the most robust.

How To Start Fishing

The earliest you can start fishing is around level ten after completing your first set of contracts. Completing contracts earns you Contract Coins, which can be used to purchase essential items. For 300 Contract Coins, you can buy a Bamboo Fishing Rod from any Contract Manager, giving you the basic equipment needed to begin your fishing journey.

During Chapter Three in the Adventure Codex, there is also an appendix side-quest called Adventures of the Expedition that also rewards that same Bamboo Fishing Rod for free.

How To Get Bait

Once you've obtained a Fishing Rod, you'll also need to get your hands on some bait. Bait can be purchased from any Contract Coin Merchant, a single purchase provides a container that has 50 paste bait in it. However, these containers can only be bought once a day, so it's important to plan your fishing sessions accordingly.

In addition to purchasing bait, you can also collect it randomly as a byproduct of gathering from various bushes and trees throughout Solisium. This provides an alternative way to stock up on bait if you're exploring or engaging in resource gathering, making it easier to keep fishing even when daily purchases are limited.

How To Catch Fish

Close

With any Fishing Rod and bait equipped, and provided you are near a body of water where fishing is possible, you'll be prompted to fish with the F key. Your Fishing Rod and bait will stay equipped when you are doing other tasks, you'll just need to swap back to them when you're ready to fish again with CTRL+F.

After casting, a fish will be lured to hook very shortly. Once hooked, you'll be prompted to press Q to reduce the amount of time needed to reel the catch in.

The bobber will move from side to side, indicating the fish is getting away. To prevent a failed cast, press A to drag the fish to the right and press D to drag the fish to the left. If it reaches too far to the right or left, the line will snap and you'll lose your bait and any rewards.

Try to keep the bobber as close as possible to the center, where the initial cast was made. Being pre-emptive in making sure it doesn't even begin to show a red icon is the best method to keeping the fish hooked and reeling it in.

The default camera mode moves when the fish moves, causing you to lose your center. It is far easier to remember where the center is by turning off the Fix Camera while Fishing setting in the gameplay settings under content at the very bottom.

Fishing Rewards

The main reward for fishing in Throne and Liberty is, unsurprisingly, fish, which is mainly used in cooking meals that provide your character various buffs. However, you also have the chance to reel in sacks; containers that can hold valuable items such as cooking ingredients, Sollant (the in-game currency), Trait Unlockstones, and potentially rare materials such as Giant Cordy's Branch, Snow Flower, Tevant's Soul Fragment, and more!
