The First Descendant has dozens of playable characters to pick from, ranging from agile casters to walking tanks. Freyna acts as a sort of hybrid between a caster and weapon user, debuffing targets with deadly poisons that can spread in an instant. Build her correctly, and she can serve as the ultimate jack-of-all-trades character for most endgame content.

Since she isn't a starter, you'll need to earn Freyna first. The good news is that she's one of the easiest Descendants to acquire and can be earned fairly early in the campaign. Let's go over how you can unlock Freyna, explain how her abilities work, and break down how to best play the master of poison.

How To Unlock Freyna

Freyna's components can be obtained from certain activities on Vespers in Normal difficulty. Since you unlock Vespers fairly early in the campaign, Freyna can be obtained within the opening hours of your playthrough. All of her parts have a 20% drop chance and come pre-built. Once you get all four components, you can craft Freyna right away. Her parts drop in the following locations:

  • Enhanced Cells: The Shelter dungeon in Vespers.
  • Stabilizer: Ruins Path mission in Vespers.
  • Spiral Catalyst: Ruins Underground Entrance mission in Vespers.
  • Freyna Code: The Void Reactor in Sterile Land.
    • Requires Amorphous Material Pattern: Freyna.

Freyna Abilities Explained

Passive

All of Freyna's abilities inflict Poison, a damage-over-time debuff that deals a portion of her Skill Power damage each second for ten seconds. For each enemy inflicted with poison, you gain 1.2% more Toxin Skill Power, stacking up to 15 times (18% total). This bonus power cannot be modified through installed modules.

You can opt to modify her passive with the Contagion module, which causes all poisoned enemies to spread their poison debuff on death. This effect can be modified with Skill Range modules.

Venom Trauma

Fires a toxic bullet that explodes on impact, creating a toxic puddle that inflicts Room Zero Trauma. Enemies afflicted with Room Zero Trauma take continuous damage and inflict poison to nearby enemies.

Venom Trauma launches a projectile that detonates after it travels a short distance, creating a toxic pool at its detonation point. Enemies within the pool will gain Room Zero Trauma, a damage-over-time effect that spreads poison to nearby foes. Room Zero Trauma doesn't deal much damage on its own, but it's a useful tool for spreading poison to ramp up Freyna's passive.

This skill greatly benefits from Skill Range, as it increases the size of the toxic puddle and the spread radius of Room Zero Trauma. You might also want to build this skill for Duration as well to make Room Zero Trauma last longer.

Defense Mechanism

Protect your body with poison. You gain increased DEF while this skill is active. Attacking enemies are also inflicted with Room Zero Trauma while this buff is active.

Freyna enshrouds her body with a deadly cloud of poison, causing all incoming damage to reflect Room Zero Trauma back at the enemy. This debuff works the exact same as her first ability, spreading the poison ailment to enemies near the infected target. You can enhance the spread radius by speccing for Skill Range.

While this buff is active, Freyna's DEF stat will also increase by 25%. The DEF increase is additive with similar modifiers like Increased DEF and cannot be scaled. We suggest using this skill to rapidly spread Room Zero Trauma in the thick of combat, not for the DEF boost.

Putrid Venom

Throw poison to create a toxic swamp. Enemies inside the swamp are poisoned and are venom-soaked, leaving behind toxic footprints as they move. These footprints also inflict poison.

Putrid Venom is a stronger variant of her first ability. It functions more or less the same. You fire a projectile that explodes, leaving behind a large pool of toxin. The difference is that enemies who touch the pool create toxic footprints as they move, effectively spreading the toxic pool. Enemies inside the sludge will become poisoned and gain Room Zero Trauma, spreading poison to nearby enemies.

This is your bread-and-butter skill for clearing adds, so you'll want to make it as large as possible by speccing for Skill Range and Duration. A single puddle can lockdown spawn locations and other chokepoints for you, which you can make even stronger with the Contagion augment for her passive. If possible, get as much Cooldown Reduction (CDR) as possible to spam this ability when you can.

Venom Baptism

Equip Freyna's signature machine gun, inheriting your current weapon's modules. While active, each shot inflicts Room Zero Trauma and scales with your Skill Power. Lasts until you run out of bullets or the ability ends.

Venom Baptism replaces your current weapon with Freyna's signature machine gun. Unlisted in the ability's in-game description, this gun inherits all your weapon modules. If you install fire rate onto your weapon, Venom Baptism will fire faster. If you install multiple magazine mods onto your weapon, then Venom Baptism has more bullets to work with. Et cetera.

Skill critical hit modules on your Descendant apply to Venom Baptism. Stack them with weapon critical mods to deal some serious damage.

The weapon itself is a slow-firing, high-damage machine gun with moderate critical stats. Each round from this weapon scales with Skill Power and inflicts Room Zero Trauma, making this a devastating weapon for clearing fodder units around an Elite or Colossus unit. Venom Baptism has poor accuracy, however, so try to stay close to your target. Skill Power, Skill Criticals, and CDR are the best ways of scaling this ability.

How To Play Freyna

Freyna is a highly versatile Descendant that can suit any playstyle. By default, she is an area denial character who focuses on locking down chokepoints with poison DoT effects. Without augments, you'll want to spec for Range and make liberal use of her first and third abilities. Cover the ground in poison whenever you can.

For a more weapon-focused playstyle, you'll want to stack as much Cooldown Reduction as possible. Use your first three abilities to spread poison, then cast your ultimate to inflict some serious damage. With a high CDR rating, you should be able to use your ultimate weapon every 20-30 seconds, potentially lower if you have a CDR affix on your reactor. You can also replace her third ability with the Venom Synthesis augment to make her a true weapon platform.

Ideal Stats

HP, DEF, Range, CDR

Freyna is a character that doesn't excel until you've put some serious investment into her. With that said, you can get her base kit online by speccing for Skill Range and Cooldown Reduction. Before we do that, we first need to install Increased HP and Increased DEF to make sure Freyna can survive in Hard difficulty. If you drop either mod, there's a good chance you'll get one shot in Void Intercept missions like Hanged Man.

A max rank Skill Extension is enough to roughly double your ability range, making your first and third abilities much more consistent. Spreading poison should be easy enough, allowing you to ramp up your passive to gain some much-needed Skill Power.

For our remaining points, we run Numble Fingers for shorter cooldowns and Focus on Tech to buff most of our skill damage—it applies to everything except your second ability. We finish the build with Toxic Specialist for a little more damage. If you're willing to put an Energy Activator on Freyna, we recommend upgrading these two mods to max rank.
