Sonic X Shadow Generations: Complete Chemical Plant Guide
Sonic X Shadow Generations has given us another remake of what was already a pseudo-remake of classic Sonic levels, except now we have Shadow added in, too. While that does mean the majority of Sonic's content is left untouched, Shadow has brand-new content all unique to him.

Sonic X Shadow Generations shines brightest with its Shadow levels, but its boss battles were a janky walk through memory lane.
Posts 1That said, you can't beat a good ol' Sonic level, and Chemical Plant is one of the most well-known of them all. There's a lot to find and do across Classic and Modern Sonic levels here, as well as some new flourishes to freshen up the experience. Here's everything you need to conquer the Chemical Plant.
How To Get S Rank In Chemical Plant
Chemical Plant Act 1 S Rank
Like always, momentum is the strongest defining characteristic of Classic Sonic, and that means he'll have to slow down a little bit every now and then. Right at the beginning of the Act is a good example, as slowly jumping along the moving platform will let Sonic reach a higher path that avoids most of the underwater sections.
Whenever you come across a quarter pipe, make sure to use a fully charged Spin Dash. This will typically bring you to a higher area that even Sonic's highest momentum couldn't reach otherwise.
Bounce off enemies wherever possible, as this will both let you get to higher areas, and typically speed you along the stage faster than trying to avoid them.
If you do end up in the water, go as fast as you can. You will always have enough air to escape without refilling at air bubbles if you keep up the pace.
Beyond this, there are no major gimmicks to look out for. Complete the stage in under 2:00 minutes with a score of 50,000 or more to earn that A Rank, and upgrade it to an S Rank with a Perfect Clear.
Chemical Plant Act 2 S Rank
Modern Sonic goes fast, at times faster than the stage can actually manage. Slowing down is an active hindrance to Modern Sonic, especially with how upset the camera gets, so keep the speed up all the way through and keep an eye out for secret paths.
In fact, you can find one such hidden path right at the very beginning. On both sides of the main pathway are two others. Both of them allow you to skip the section leading up to the highway, though they are quite hard to reach. Try them at your own risk.
On the highway, try to reach the Rainbow Speed Ramp as this will lead you to a crane handle, letting you speed past the grind rail. After hitting the subsequent side-scrolling section, jump almost immediately after the checkpoint to reach a higher section letting you bypass the underwater section below.
If you do end up below the water though, just start dashing. Sonic will start running so fast he will rise to the water's surface. Boosting is a good aim in general for Modern Sonic, as it means he is always at top speed letting him reach incredible heights from quarter pipes.
Near the end of the level, Sonic will grab onto a crane handle before approaching a grind rail. Make sure to quickly use your Homing Attack before landing to latch onto another crane handle, bring you even closer to your goal.
And that's it! Avoiding the underwater sections is more than enough to get you an S Rank, and as long as you keep up the speed falling once or two isn't too severe a punishment either. As long as you get a time under 2:30 minutes and a score of 50,000 then you're all set for an A Rank, with a Perfect Clear boosting it up to an S Rank.
Where To Find Every Red Star Ring In Chemical Plant
There are ten Red Star Rings in total in the Chemical Plant, five for each Sonic. They're pretty well spaced out across the routes, making them next to impossible to acquire all of them in a single run. Take all the time you need, and maybe even speed it along with our helpful guide.
Chemical Plant Act 1 Red Stars
Classic Sonic's Red Star Rings can be hard to find due to the locked camera from the side-scrolling perspective, so here's where they all are to ease your search.
- Red Star Ring 1: Take the lower path from the beginning, with the Red Star sat atop the pipe you enter.
- Red Star Ring 2: On the straight path with multiple blue bubbles emerging, the Red Star will be situated in the second set of blue bubbles.
- Red Star Ring 3: Instead of Spin Dashing up the quarter pipe, take the floating platform upwards. Jump along the further floating platform here to reach the Red Star.
- Red Star Ring 4: This Red Star is found in an underwater section, just before you emerge from the water. Bounce off the spider enemy to reach it, or jump down from above the water.
- Red Star Ring 5: Near the end of the level, you can find this Red Star after running across a series of collapsing floating platforms. It will be found at the top of a series of springs and floating platforms.
The reward for this is the skill, Breath Holder.
Chemical Plant Act 2 Red Stars
With how fast Sonic moves, it's quite simple to just dash past a Red Star without even seeing it, so we're going to show you each of the locations so you can keep on going fast.
- Red Star Ring 1: After jumping from the Rainbow Speed ramp on the highway, you'll find this Red Starin the middle of a path at the end of the crane handle journey.
- Red Star Ring 2: After finishing the grind rail and dodging the bombs, jump to the higher past past the checkpoint to get this Red Star.
- Red Star Ring 3: When ascending up a slanted section, you will find the Red Star beside a spider enemy.
- Red Star Ring 4: In the skydiving section, keep to the northern edge of the tunnel. The Red Star is found here just before you land.
- Red Star Ring 5: After coming off the highway near the end, ascend to the grind rail either off the ramp or by the hidden springs. The Red Star will be picked up along the way.
The reward for this is the skill, Smasher Bonus.
Where To Find Every Hidden Chao In Chemical Plant
Newly added with Sonic X Shadow Generations are the famous icons of the Sonic series, Chaos. The small guys who have their own garden, not the all-powerful emeralds. There are six of them hidden in each stage, three for each Sonic to find.
Chemical Plant Act 1 Hidden Chaos
The Chaos are very well-hidden, and quite out of the way from where you could expect. Some are in plain sight, while others are full-on hidden in locations you can't see without actively looking. Here's where you can find them all for Classic Sonic.
- Hidden Chao 1: This Chao is found in a small underwater section after a failed springboard jump.
- Hidden Chao 2:This Chao is found after traveling through a pipe, beside a series of Ring Boxes.
- Hidden Chao 3: This Chao is found in the same location as the fifth Red Star Ring. Simply follow the springs all the way to the high path to find the Chao waiting on the edge.
Chemical Plant Act 2 Hidden Chaos
Sonic moves at, well, supersonic speed. And supersonic speeds aren't quite suited to searching meticulously for tiny little fellows that don't seem keen on being found. So here's where to find all of them to save you the effort.
- Hidden Chao 1: Take the low path in the side-scrolling section and let Sonic fall into the water. The Chao will be waiting at the very bottom on the left.
- Hidden Chao 2: After the skydiving section, the Chao is resting on the left side of the room waiting to be rescued.
- Hidden Chao 3: Just before using the hidden springs to ascend to the grind rail near the end of the level, back to the lower section of the current platform. The Chao will be resting in the corner by the ledge.
With that, you have proffered every collectible on offer in the Chemical Plant, as well as got another S Rank in your collection.
