The long-awaited Silent Hill 2 remake has been given an age rating by the Korean rating board, which suggests that it's nearing the end of its development.

Although it was only announced just over a year ago, the wait for the Silent Hill 2 remake has felt like a surprisingly long one. That's mostly due to how little information we've received since October 2022 (something that Bloober Team blames Konami for), but it looks like the Silent Hill drought is finally coming to a close.

As reported by Gematsu, the Silent Hill 2 remake has officially been given an age rating in Korea. As you'd probably expect from a Silent Hill game, it's been given a mature rating for "excessive violence", "excessive blood from hitting and being hit", and "expressions of fear, such as gloomy backgrounds and bizarre sounds". Yep, that's Silent Hill 2 alright.

The age-rating is interesting enough on its own to hear a bit more about how violent and scary the remake is aiming to be, but the most interesting thing about it is that Silent Hill 2 being given a rating seems to imply that it's nearing the end of its development and could be getting a release date soon. PlayStation did previously claim it was launching in 2024 alongside Metal Gear Sold 3's remake, something that now seems a lot more certain.

Games usually aren't given an age-rating until they're somewhat feature-complete and nearly ready to launch, so Silent Hill 2's remake getting one now is a good sign of where it's at development-wise. It also tracks with recent comments from Konami at the end of 2023 that claimed it was in the "final stages" of development. Looks like we're not that far at all from returning to Silent Hill.

"A horror adventure game depicting the story of an encounter with a woman who resembles his dead wife in a village of memories."

To play devil's advocate for a second, it's worth noting (as many have pointed out on Twitter) that Silent Hill: The Short Message was given an age rating long before it was ever announced and released. That's reason enough to not get your hopes up too high, but it's worth remembering that it was shadow-dropped and seems to have been internally delayed and left to release a bit after it had been finished. We did have concept art and gameplay images of it a year ago, after all.
