Super Mario Bros. Wonder changed a lot of elements from the Mario formula while still staying true to what it means to be a Mario game. The changes tend to involve simplifying things while adding fun new features, and one place where this is clear is the Boss Fights.

All of them except the final fight are against Bowser Jr., and while that might seem repetitive, not all Worlds end in a boss fight. This keeps the encounters fresh, as each one builds up with what came before, and with the Wonder Powers, they are the right flavor of unpredictable.

6 Battleships

The various Battleships found in the game all work roughly the same: jump in, avoid the barrage of enemies, and fight a conveyor belt. Much like the Bowser Jr. fights, they’re all similar but keep adding changes to keep battles entertaining.

Still, there’s no denying that fighting a conveyor belt can hardly be considered a Boss Fight, hence why they are all ranked together here. In reality, the challenge in those cases is surviving the whole level, but as individual bosses, the Battleships are good but not great.

5 Pipe Rock Plateau Palace

Being the first confrontation, the fight against Bowser Jr. at Pipe Rock Plateau Palace is certainly the easiest, but not any less fun. This will introduce you to his brand of Wonder Power, as he transforms into a glowy masked version of himself able to warp reality.

The encounter starts simple enough, with him dashing around inside his shell and popping out for you to land a hit. It’s important to explain the basics for newcomers, after all. But after the first hit, he’ll don the mask and alter you both, making you a giant and him small enough to be a pixel.

The roles are reversed for the final portion of the fight, with you having to dodge his massive size. While the fight is basic Mario fanfare, there’s enough strategy added to keep it from being a rehash from older titles, like being able to stun Bowser Jr. while you’re a giant.

4 Deep Magma Bog Palace

Likely the hardest of the Bowser Jr. duels, the fight at Deep Magma Bog Palace throws a lot of things at you with little time to adjust. It’s certainly a visual spectacle, although if you’re the one playing it, it’s hard to really appreciate. As a fight, this is the one that shows Bowser Jr. actually trying to turn the tables in his favor.

He’ll turn off the lights while making the platforms move in hard-to-predict patterns; again, not that hard on its own, but the combination of factors makes it a bit too chaotic. It’s still a great fight, and one that’ll keep you on your toes, particularly once he starts summoning clones. These clones are easy to tell apart thanks to their color, but you better remember who’s who once the lights go out.

3 Sunbaked Desert Palace

It might come as a surprise that the Boss of the Desert World is water-themed, yet it’s actually foreshadowed by the plot. Bowser Jr. is stealing all the water from the inhabitants of Sunbaked Desert, and he’ll use his watery reserves in his fight against you. What makes this fight different is all the swimming you’ll be doing.

Water bosses aren’t common; there are so few that have you go in and out of the water. With the added strategies Badges add to the game, you can have the Dolphin Badge and make this fight easier and more fun. Yet the real fun is when Bowser Jr. uses his Wonder Power to create water pools suspended in midair.

Without the Dolphin Badge, you’ll have to time your movement carefully. Bowser Jr. can move faster than your basic swim speed, so predicting his movements is crucial.

2 Fluff-Puff Peaks Palace

The fight against Bowser Jr. at Fluff-Puff Peaks Palace will be the second time you fight against him, so the game expects you to be ready, yet it won’t throw everything at you like in the Deep Magma Bog fight. It has the perfect mix of Wonder and strategy, making it the best confrontation against Bowser’s heir.

It’s all about change in the environment and keeping an even playing field. The platforms you’re on during the fight will be constantly moving, so with careful planning, you can trap Bowser Jr. so he can’t harm you. He can do the same thing to you, however, so mind your steps.

As the fight advances, the terrain changes to slippery ice. This makes his movements less predictable but also less accurate, so you can still come out on top. The final part has you standing on yellow goo; here, Bowser Jr. has a clear advantage, but one more careful hit on him, and you’ll be done.

1 Castle Bowser

As a fight that’s been hyped up throughout the whole game, it certainly lives up to the expectations. Fighting Castle Bowser is all about rhythm, dodging, and spectacle. The whole fight is framed like a concert, with the crowds cheering on as it escalates more and more.

You’ll have to time your jumps to the rhythm if you want to have a chance against Bowser since there’s no Power-Up or Badge that can help you hurt him. It’s a tough but fair fight, and you can’t help but bop your head as it goes on.

The fight has a very clear design, leading you to understand what you’re supposed to hit and what you’ll have to dodge simply by looking at it. This makes it the best Boss Fight in the game and one of the best Bowser fights in the series.
