Ever since release, Starfield fans have questioned why Bethesda doesn't allow them to pilot mechs, despite them being so prevalent in the game's lore and can literally be found in a number of locations across The Settled Systems in various states of disrepair. It seems like such a slam dunk for a technology-driven title like Starfield, but our posteriors will unfortunately never get to feel the warm embrace of a mech's pilot seat.

One Starfield player wasn't content with that future though, and set out to do what Bethesda didn't. First reported by PC Gamer, a modder by the name of Jared Kohr has shared a video of their ambitious project to bring pilotable mechs to The Settled Systems, showcasing themselves stomping around a rather dusty planet and its landing pad in an absolute behemoth of a machine.

While the demonstration is only a couple of minutes long, it does showcase what running round in a mech might look like, and even includes the use of weaponry to blow away a poor guy clearly terrified out of his mind. We also get a nice closeup of the mech design that Jared Kohr is using, as well as a distance shot to give us an idea of what we'd look like stomping around.

Unfortunately, it looks like we'll be waiting a while to actually step into the shoes of a massive mech ourselves, as Kohr explains in a reply to the YouTube video that the feature is "definitely not in a playable state" at the moment. It also sounds as though there's still a lot of work to be done, despite how good it looks in the video, as Kohr goes on to explain that "multiple functions are either not working at all or as intended/expected".

Kohr mentions that the main intention of his video is to potentially inspire others and maybe show Bethesda itself that there's interest in the addition of mechs from fans. Judging from the rest of the comments under Kohr's video, it's a pretty highly-requested feature, and probably up there with buildable space stations at the top of the list of desired additions.

Finally, Kohr ends their comment with a call for help, as they explain that they can't exactly go to Bethesda with questions about how certain things work. That's why Kohr has put out a call for "more knowledgeable mod authors" for help, though he may struggle to find them.

One very popular group of modders that were responsible for the Skyrim Together co-op mod recently turned their attention to Starfield next, but gave up, claiming that the game is "trash" and that they weren't going to "put [their] heart and soul into a mod for a game as mediocre as this". Ouch.
