Summary

  • Hard Drive, a satirical gaming publication, recently wrote an article about a "new hardcore mode" which deletes your save file if you open the Stardew Valley wiki.
  • This is now a reality thanks to a new mod which, as the article describes, deletes your save if you dare to look at even one guide.
  • The mod will even close the page afterwards, denying you access after erasing all of your progress.

Satirical gaming website Hard Drive posted an article this week about a "new hardcore mode" in Stardew Valley that wipes your save file when you open the game's wiki, so, of course, fans turned it into a real thing.

You can read the story here.

As reported by GamesRadar, a software engineer called Sylvie Nightshade has designed a mod which "will erase your save file if you even dare look at the wiki in a browser tab". It does so "by scanning the title of every window open on your computer and erasing everything if any windows contains 'Stardew Valley Wiki' in its title".

So, if you look up a guide, you'll lose all of your progress. The mod doesn't however include "seven new unique scenes involving Mayor Lewis' shorts". Maybe in a future update, eh?

The Mod Even Closes The Stardew Valley Wiki Afterwards

You don't just lose all of your hard work if you open the wiki to find answers, but the wiki itself will close to rub salt in the wound. So on top of being punished for turning to the internet to get answers, you'll be denied access anyway.

Nightshade even claims to have taught themselves SMAPI (the Stardew Valley modding API) in two hours to put this mod together.

The mod is completely free and can be downloaded via GitHub, linked in the tweet embedded above, and Nightshade stresses that it isn't malicious, a concern some raised over it scanning your browser outside of the game. "If the term 'win32 api' is meaningless to you I don't want to hear your opinions on what is malware behaviour and what isn't."
