Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth hits us with some of the funniest moments in recent gaming memory and then immediately follows it up with deep sadness and melancholy. The quotes below all reflect the latter. The way characters in Rebirth talk about their experiences, trauma, and relationships compared to the original Final Fantasy 7 reflects how the medium has grown since 1997.

After the credits roll on Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth's emotional main questline, here are some of the best things you can do in the post-game!
PostsIt's a shining example of how a big-budget, triple-A title can still have heart even as hundreds of millions of dollars are poured into refining the gameplay. These quotes will be rolling around in our heads until the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy reaches its conclusion.
There are massive spoilers for Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth below.
7 Venturing Out Into The Unknown Is Scary
But At Least With A Steel Sky You Know Your Limits. Out here... It's Endless
- Tifa
Tifa says this to Cloud as they are resting in a camp underneath Junon. She's not from Midgar, so the open sky wouldn't startle her the way it does Aerith who basically grew up underneath the plate, but the quote also relates to where the party is at this moment in the game.
In Midgar, they had a clear objective of weakening Shinra. Now, they are just following some people in robes, hoping to find a lead on Sephiroth. Even if life was worse in Midgar, some people find comfort in knowing their place rather than being dropped into the open.
6 Scared By Your Own Hatred
Sometimes I Imagine The Things I'd Do To Him If I Got The Chance...I Start Thinking Things So Dark And Ugly That...It Scares Me
- Aerith
Aerith and her mother were subjects of Hojo's experiments before the two escaped. She appears jolly and carefree when you meet her, but as Cloud gets to know her, she reveals her deeper feelings about the world and life.
Her rage towards Hojo, despite her soft personality, shows the depth of the scientist's evil. All the same, she doesn't like what she could become when she thinks about how she hates him.
Being radicalized to hate by trauma is a theme also explored by Barret's backstory and the destruction of Corel.
5 Destroying The World For Entertainment
This Is What The Planet's Dyin' for? This Is Why We're Bleeding Her Dry?
- Barret
It's one thing to use energy and technology to make our lives better and more comfortable, but to know the world is being destroyed because of excess like the Gold Saucer really makes Barret's blood boil. In the real world, some lavish lifestyles similarly leave a massive carbon footprint, all in the name of leisure.

PostsBarret comes from a mining town that was destroyed because he thought mako energy would make life better. He goes to the Gold Saucer above and sees they are using it for needless pleasures and remembers how his life and home were destroyed for it. He knows that the planet will be next all because people wanted a small vacation.
4 A Very Emperor Palpatine Thing To Say
Loss...It Engulfs Fleeting Moments Of Joy, Transforming Them Into Rage, Sadness, And Hatred
- Sephiroth
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth answers the question we all had on our mind since Final Fantasy 7 Remake and kills Aerith in front of our eyes, albeit with a twist.
This quote will similarly hang over us and the party the way it would have in 1997 as we go through the rest of the game without Aerith. All the fun moments we had with her in Costa del Sol and the Gold Saucer are turned into tragedy as they remind us that she's no longer with us.
Given the complexities of Rebirth's ending, there's no telling what role Aerith will have in the trilogy's final installment.
3 A Joke That Reveals More About Red XIII's Character
Grr.....
- Red XIII
This is the one memorable quote that isn't profound but still reflects the odd humor and world of the characters. It's difficult to count how many times someone calls Red XIII a dog, and then he proceeds to growl at them.
While a running gag, his offense at being called a dog also reflects his low self-esteem. It's why he feels the need to present himself as older and wiser with a rough voice. Perhaps we'll see him grow in the future when he stops caring that people think he's a dog and stops changing his voice.
2 Being There Is The Most Heroic Act Of All
You Stayed When I Needed You The Most. If That's Not A Hero...Then I Don't Know What Is
- Tifa
Cloud is constantly taunted by Sephiroth throughout the game. At worst, he is directly controlled, but even in calmer times, he is progressively more unsure of himself because of Sephiroth talking into his ear.

PostsTifa reassures him by bringing up their relationship. And this was after he almost killed her. She not only has it in her to forgive him, but she still believes he can do great things. It's not because he is great with the Buster Sword, but because he is a great friend who didn't abandon Tifa, just like Tifa isn't abandoning Cloud at his lowest point.
1 Nothing Really Cushions A Tragedy
Knowing That The People We Love Aren't Really Gone? It Doesn't Make It Any Easier To Let Them Go.
- Aerith
In Final Fantasy 7 the lifestream isn't a part of a religious belief but presented as fact. All the same, it doesn't make people feel any better when people die and return to it. It's an especially dark quote coming from Aerith only a few hours before she is killed.
At the end of Rebirth, we don't know the implications of the multiple universes and what it means for Aerith, but the ending still does a good job of making us feel the loss and showing the characters mourning over their friend.
