The Star Fox remake for Switch 2 brings back one of the coolest easter eggs from the original by giving Fox a pair of aviators like his dad in the unlockable Expert Mode.

Although it's easy to look at the original Star Fox as a fairly simple space shooter, anyone who's played either the original or the remake knows there's a lot more to it than that. From lovable characters with a great dynamic to masterfully crafted levels, there's a reason why Star Fox has been brought back so many times.

One of my favourite details from the original game is all of its easter eggs, which sadly doesn't include the fan-favourite theory about amputated legs. Instead, I mean things like the unlockable Expert Mode that notably gave Fox a very stylish pair of aviators. That mode and its fashion statement are thankfully back in action for the remake.

Don't Worry, Fox Still Gets His Shades In Star Fox Remake's Expert Mode

It Looks Like On-Foot Mode Has Been Left Behind, Though

All the way back in Star Fox 64, there was an unlockable difficulty called Expert Mode, which could only be accessed by earning a medal in all of the game's missions on normal difficulty. As the name suggests, Expert Mode is much harder than the base game, with tougher enemies, more damage taken, and nerfed power-ups.

The one upside to playing in Expert Mode was that Fox would get a very snazzy pair of aviators that would be shown on his avatar and in certain cutscenes. Beyond just completing Fox's badass space mercenary look, it's a nice reference to his father, James McCloud, and his signature sunglasses.

Well, I'm very happy to say that Expert Mode and its snazzy aviators are back in the Star Fox remake (as showcased by YouTuber Nintendo Unity) and arguably look even cooler than they did in 64. The unlock method for Expert Mode is the same, as you'll need to unlock every medal on Normal difficulty, which is a lot harder than it might seem.

While Expert Mode is back in all its glory, it looks like Star Fox 64's other iconic unlockable, on-foot battles during Versus Mode, hasn't been adapted for the remake. This makes sense considering Versus was replaced with Battle, but it's still a bit of a shame that easter egg didn't end up being brought over in some capacity. At least we've got Fox's shades to keep us happy.
