Fish is often plentiful if you live on an island, and it's the same inLuma Island. Like other cozy games, you'll be able to catch a variety of fish for collection purposes and to use in different cooking recipes, along with different aquatic plants and sea life like Crabs.

Not only is fishing a core mechanic in general, but it's also important to both the Fisherman and Treasure Hunter Professions if you choose to get a permit for them. Whether it's for your profession or fun, we'll tell you how to catch fish, where to find them all, and what you can do with them.

Updated December 21st, 2024 by Haven Smith: We've updated this article to include new information regarding fishing obstacles, all Jungle fish and their locations, and updated recipes and their Luma Energy costs.

How To Catch Fish

To catch any fish or certain types of sea creatures, you'll need a Fishing Rod equipped with the right regional bait, like Caterpillars for farm or town-based fish.

First, cast your rod out to or near the fish's location in the water and a yellow exclamation point will appear above the fish's head if you're in its attention range.

Each fish has at least twoparticular swimming patterns that it will follow in the water source it's located in,depending on the angle and location you cast your rod from.

After a second, the fish will bite, and you'll get into the fishing minigame. During this portion, you'll need to follow the fish around with your bobber while avoiding any obstacles. When you're close enough to the fish, a gray indicator with a hook will appear above its head.

As you keep up with it, the catching indicator will flash quicker, and more will appear at one time until you hit the reeling portion, then you'll need to rapidly click to bring the fish over to you and successfully catch it.

Wait for the fish at certain points in their swimming routine where you get the most time available without it being near an obstacle to make it easier to catch them.

The more your Fishing Rod is upgraded, the quicker it'll move, and it'll be easier to maneuver around obstacles while chasing a fish, and the time needed to reel in a fish will be drastically reduced.

Types Of Fishing Obstacles

Once you begin exploring the second region of the game, the Forest, and beyond, you'll begin to have to deal with obstacles while fishing: rocks and whirlpools.

Rocks appear in the Forest, Mountain, and Jungle Regions, and cause your bobber to bounce off them. This will throw you off course slightly and interrupt the catching sequence, though it doesn't cause any damage to your rod or the bobber.

The whirlpools are similar in that they throw you off course, but they cause you to spin around in them for a moment, toss you much farther, and sometimes even in the opposite direction.

If you're quick enough or only skirt the very edge of the whirlpool, you can avoid being caught in it completely and continue following the fish.

Fish will swim circles around or in between the rocks and whirlpools to make it harder for you to catch them, and incorporate more complex swimming patterns in combination with this.

How To Catch Sea Creatures And Aquatic Plants

Besides fish and what you can forage or catch from around water sources, you can find a handful of other types of sea life that are used in different Fisherman or Cooking Profession recipes: Jellyfish, Stingray, and Squid.

You still need a Fishing Rod and Bait to catch them, and they can be found in any of its home region's water sources, but they can only be caught in spots without bubbles, and you can't have a fish nearby or else it'll be attracted instead.

You can also find materials like Hay, Stones, Ores, and Twigs when fishing from empty water, and these will be instantly caught instead of needing to be reeled in.

As for aquatic plants and land-based sea creatures like Mussels, they spawn along any of their home region's rivers, lakes, and beaches, and you can harvest them by hand like forageable items. These types will constantly respawn as the day goes on, and each time a new day starts.

How To Catch Treasure

Your fishing rod is also going to be used to catch treasure for Pirate-related recipes if you're going for the Treasure Hunter profession.

Instead of bait, you'll be using different types of magnets. A single metal bar makes ten of its specific magnets, and they can be equipped via the bait menu.

The type of treasure you can get is both magnet and region-specific. For example, if you use a Moonstone Magnet to fish at your farm or in town, you'll still only get Sunken Farm Treasure, not the Forest or the Mountain type.

If you wanted the Sunken Mountain Treasure specifically, you would have to be in the Mountain region and use either Moonstone or Volcanic Magnets for it.

You can use higher-tier magnets to catch lower-tier treasure, but you can't use lower-tier magnets to catch higher-tier treasure.

All Bait And Fish Locations

Close

Bait can be caught in any region of the game, and they appear near your character's location at a rate of around one critter every few seconds, though their movement speed, appearance, and what fish they can catch differ.

Each one you catch gives you a few Water Spirits, but if you don't catch them after a few moments, they'll disappear, but they endlessly respawn, so there's no penalty for missing out on one.

Beetles are unique in that they only appear on crops you've planted in tilled earth, and they appear at a much slower rate than their regional equivalent, the Caterpillar.

Different types of Bait can also be bought for Gold from the Fisherman's Shop in town if you don't feel like catching any, as well as other important resources like Salt andMagnets for treasure hunting. Up to 25 of each Bait and Magnet are available per day, while you can buy up to 50 for Salt.

All Fish And Sea Creatures

Each region has three fish to catch and four types of sea creatures or aquatic plants for you to get, with the Jungle region offering the most fishing spots of any location in the game.

The regional Fish can also be purchased at theirrespective Mr. Truffle's stores for five of the regional Nature Currency once you've caught them at least once, and you can buy up to five per day.

The sea creatures you need to use a Fishing Rod to catch aren't found at Mr. Truffle's or the Fisherman's shops even if you catch one.

If you want extra sea creatures and aquatic plants without catching them by hand, they're also found at the Fisherman's Shop in town, like with Bait, and you can purchase up to ten of each per day.

All Fisherman Profession Recipes

The majority of Fish, Sea Creatures, and Aquatic Plants are used in the Fisherman's Profession as recipe ingredients in the Fisherman's Galley, alongside regional Spice variations made in a Kiln from their respective forageables and Salt.

  • Farm Spice is made from Farm Flowers, Farm Mushrooms, and Salt.
  • Forest Spice is made from Forest Flowers, Forest Mushrooms, and Salt.
  • Mountain Spice is made from Mountain Flowers, Mountain Mushrooms, and Salt.
  • Jungle Spice is made from Jungle Flowers, Jungle Mushrooms, and Salt.

All Fisherman's Galley recipes past the Novice Level require a certain amount of Luma Energy to craft at first, but after making them for the first time, they'll no longer need Luma Energy to be made.

The amount of Luma Energy needed for each recipe may vary over time due to balance patches, which ensures the cost isn't too great compared to when you get access to them.
