Games are a funny medium. When everything is digital, no one has to age. Some characters do, of course, but a mascot is ageless in the digital world. And so brings up the age-old question - how old exactly are your favourite video game characters?

These are the kinds of questions we need to consider when thinking about the international politics of a Nintendo game.

One of the biggest examples of this is the cast of Super Mario Bros. Wonder. They've been running around with their mushrooms and drain pipes for literal decades, and haven't aged a day. Unless the Mushroom Kingdom has some great anti-aging stuff, we have to assume they're just not aging.

The Main Characters Of Super Mario Wonder

Super Mario Wonder is the celebrated return of the sidescrolling Mario series, hitting a new peak it has struggled to reach since the early DS days. As part of its main cast are both newcomers and our established heroes, all as youthful as their first appearance. Before we get started, let's give a quick rundown of who we're considering the main characters.

  • Mario, the titular plumber himself.
  • Luigi, the beloved of younger siblings the world over.
  • Peach, the princess that started it all.
  • Daisy, the ruler of the much more obscure Sarasaland.
  • Bowser, our delightful despot.
  • Bowser Jr., our delightful despot's diminutive dude.
  • Yoshi, just a literal dinosaur, but much smaller.
  • Toad, which is contrary to their name, not a toad at all. They are a mushroom.

With the exception of Bowser and his son, these are all playable characters, with Yoshi specifically playable as a form of easy mode. Wonder will have you looking at these characters in a whole new light. Once you've seen Bowser looking at Elephant Peach, there's no denying his newfound love.

Anyway, let's get into the cast's suitably vague ages.

The (Approximate) Ages Of Super Mario Wonder's Characters

First and foremost to acknowledge is that Nintendo has never strictly confirmed the ages of Mario characters within the games. On the flip side of that, however, is that they have, both intentionally and inadvertently, revealed some age ranges outside of the games in various other pieces of media and info drops.

  • Mario - Though never said within the games, an old 2005 interview with Shigeru Miyamoto had him confirm that nothing was decided about Mario at his creation other than the fact that he was around 24-25.
  • Luigi - Same as Mario, Luigi is around 24-25 as well. He's always been seen as Mario's twin brother, with Wonder specifically stating he's a little younger. We're going to assume this is minutes and not years, considering they're still twins.
  • Peach - Our Mushroom Princess has never had her age stated explicitly anywhere, though it has always been assumed she was of a similar age to Mario, around 24-25, what with the funny love going on there. We can intuit this fact, however, seeing as they were all babies at the same time in Yoshi's Island.
  • Daisy - The same can be said of Princess Daisy. Though never outright mentioned, she appears alongside all the other babies in Yoshi's island and other entries, implying she is also in the 24-25 age range. To match her up with Luigi, we'll say she leans closer to 24.
  • Bowser - Bowser is another of those fun ones where Nintendo revealed the age in the most bizarre way. In a video explaining how to set up parental controls on the Nintendo Switch, Bowser inputs his date of birth - February 5th, 1989. This very specific birthdate makes Bowser 34 years old. A remarkably young age for someone who has been chasing Mario since 1985.
  • Bowser Jr. - In the same vein as his father, Bowser Jr.'s birthday was revealed in the same video about setting up Switch parental controls. After establishing his own date of birth, Bowser inputs his son's - March 3rd, 2010, making him 13 years old as of Wonder. Once again, some powerful anti-aging for someone whose first appearance was in 2002.
  • Yoshi - It's hard to explicitly say if the Yoshi we see across the many games, Wonder included, is always the same Yoshi, considering that is also what their species is called. For ease, we'll say it is. We can derive Yoshi's age in the same way as Peach and Daisy's! Seeing as Yoshi is born at the end of Yoshi's Island, we can assume they are around 23-24.
  • Toad - Unlike Yoshi, it's basically impossible to claim that any singular Toad we see is the same Toad all the time. There are so many of them. Captain Toad, Toadette, different shades of Toad. How long does a mushroom live? Singularly, not very long at all. The mycelium network they're all connected to though? Potentially thousands of years. Treat each Toad like a shared hivemind.

Mario Wonder didn't add much in terms of redefining the ages of our long-running characters, though it didn't dispute them either. As always, most of this information isn't what you'd strictly call 'canon', so take it with a healthy pinch of salt. The lesson to take from all these characters is this - If you live a healthy life of over 30 years, you too can be perpetually in your 20s.
