Horrified is a solo or cooperative game that sees you and your friends explore town, looking for monsters and putting them back in their places. Each monster comes with its own quests to defeat them, and so part of the challenge is deciding whether your team should face each monster together and risk others moving and causing havoc for the other townsfolk.

In World of Monsters, cryptids from around the globe have descended upon your town, with an art style that borrows from genres like steampunk, Lovecraftian horror, and even a hint of noir. The Sphinx, the Yeti, and the Jiangshi all offer their own challenges, but the biggest threat of all is Cthulhu.

With Cthulhu, multi-step quests are being introduced to Horrified, with you having to complete multiple goals to take it down once and for all. It even has you leave the town entirely, for one quest set entirely within Cthulhu’s domain.

The Jiangshi is a type of vampire from Chinese mythology. Writer and game designer Sen-Foong Lim worked as a cultural consultant on the game to make sure there was a realism and accuracy to these the portrayal of these hopping vampires.

Even More Monsters

The big theme of this edition is different worlds colliding into the town, thanks to the extradimensional void opening up at its centre. Of course, this is how Cthulhu and the Lovecraft mythos is being brought into the game, but it also has another neat impact: you can also add monsters from the last release, Greek Monsters, to your game.

While earlier Horrified releases, like the original Universal-themed one and American Monsters, won’t be compatible with World of Horror, characters from both games will be putting in cameos for long-time fans of the series.

World of Horror includes rules for running the Greek Monsters lineup, but head of new games marketing at Ravensburger Lysa Penrose also hints that we could see future Horrified games be backwards compatible with World of Horror as well, saying “it’s the perfect ‘base’ setting to mix and match monsters from [Greek Monsters]… and dare I threaten future Horrified games to come!”.

Horrified: World Of Monsters launches on August 1.
