Completing Major Orders in Helldivers 2 always comes with a reward. Whether it's new Stratagems or Medals, our march for liberty takes us prizeward every time. We liberated Varylia 5 and got the Emancipator Exosuit, we braved Penta for the reward of the RL-77 Airburst Rocket Launcher, and we even took on Sony's threat of PSN account linking and defeated the giant.

However, things changed when Game Master Joel asked us to choose between saving trapped survivors on Vernen Wells or MD-17 Anti-Tank Mines on Marfark, with the former featuring no reward. By now you know that the community chose to save the children, and Arrowhead in return donated to the Save the Children foundation. However, you can be sure the community's decision wasn't taken lightly.

As is characteristic of the community, us at TheGamer included, the Major Orders were initially met with Super Earth and Managed Democracy in mind. Children weren't going to help us take down Automaton tanks, so the choice seemed obvious. Was this order Joel's idea of a sick joke? Of course we were going to choose the mines! Perhaps this was in line with the game's meta narrative of faux democracy and putting the state before the people. Reddit threads unfurled and memes came hot off the factory lines, those poor children were going to have to fend for themselves. But, people are the very essence of democracy.

The pro-mines sentiment was soon met with a counter-narrative, one that wanted to save the children - but since this is the Helldivers community, it was in character. Why do we travel to the far reaches of the galaxy and dive into the very mouth of hell? So that our children can enjoy the liberty and freedom that the managed democracy of Super Earth affords them. They are the future of the Helldivers program! One Helldiver is stronger than any stratagem alone. And so, it was decided that the children must be saved - for the future of Super Earth.

Taking off my Helldiver helmet for a minute, it's truly remarkable that the community opted for the path with no reward because it was the right thing to do, in character or not. Be it humanity, curiosity, or just for the memes, the community banded together and saved those precious resources… I mean children. With no promise of reward, we'd have to settle for the satisfaction of knowing we did the right thing. Did Joel the all-knowing see this coming?

Arrowhead made this funny little joke and we answered in our own funny little way, and we thought that would be that. Until, of course, the devs donated $4,311 to Save the Children as a direct result of our efforts. You can't tell me that you didn't feel good when you saw the news of Arrowhead's donation. Even if it was just a cover for a backfiring joke, I don't think it really bothered any of the devs or players. We did this as a community, and we should be proud of ourselves.

We actually helped save real life children. None of our other gaming achievements mean anything compared to this. All those FromSoftware bosses we've beaten? Garbage. 500 headshots in some shooter? No one cares. Speedrunning Animal Well in a minute? Boring. But contributing to saving the trapped survivors on Vernen Wells in Helldivers 2? That makes you a hero and a Super Citizen. I salute you.
