Katsuhiro Harada Doesn't Think There's Much Interest In A Classic Tekken Collection

Summary
- Harada doesn't think a Tekken classic collection would work.
- He argues that 3D fighters age worse than 2D fighters, both visually and mechanically.
- Instead, he feels that 3D fighting game fans gravitate towards newer releases, rather than revisit classics.
Tekken director Katsuhiro Harada doesn't think a classic collection would work because fans are more interested in more recent titles. This is despite Capcom finding success with its own classic game releases, something that Harada puts down to the differences between 2D and 3D fighting games.
This comes from an interview with TheGamer's Axel Bosso, in which both Harada and game designer Michael Murray comment on the possibility of a classic Tekken collection. Here, they explain that 3D fighting games showcase the best technology you can offer at the time - something that they feel ages worse than 2D fighters.
Tekken Leads Feel That Older Games Aren't As Impressive Anymore
"It's different for [2D] fighting games because 3D fighting game players tend to play the latest installment", says Murray, translating for Harada. "Starting from early on, it was polygon character models that really pushed the edge of graphics at the time. So when you see it later on, it doesn't look nearly as impressive as it used to.
"2D fighting games, because they were just sprite characters and stuff, they don't seem to age graphically that much. And that's not the main reason people played it in the first place."
Murray gives his own response, sounding slightly more open to the idea, with some caveats. "If it's a drastically different gameplay change, like a Tag 2 compared to 7 or 8, maybe that's something I would probably pick up and play for a little bit. Or maybe the Tekken Force mode or Devil Within or something like that," he says. "But I wouldn't even see myself picking up Tekken 3 and playing against friends for an extended period of time. So yeah, there is a difference we feel between the 3D fighters and 2D fighters in that respect."
My counterpoint to this would be that SoulCalibur on the Dreamcast is one of the best games out there, but oh well...
Possible classic game ports weren't the only topic that Harada and Murray discussed. They also told us about the time that Harada tried to get Colonel Sanders in Tekken as a guest fighter, but was shot down by KFC. So, that's one Tekken 8 DLC character we can rule out.
