Halo: Campaign Evolved is now available in advanced access ahead of its July 28 launch, but a mandatory Microsoft sign-in, server queues, constant crashes, shoddy performance, and 30fps cutscenes have marred what should have been an exciting return to the series’ roots.
With over 2,000 reviews at the time of writing, the game holds a ‘Mixed’ score on Steam, as a frustrated community warns fans away from buying the game, urging them to play the Master Chief Collection or original PC port instead.
“Login failed. Cannot play the single-player game as servers are overloaded,” wrote one reviewer. “Screw your DRM. Combat was not evolved.”
Halo Studios responded, explaining that the login issue has now been resolved, but it’s mind-boggling that a campaign-exclusive game cannot be played offline, and is running into the same issues typical of an MMO.
“In French, the voice are in AI,” claims another review, alleging a serious issue with the localization in other countries. “I would have [felt] more respected if you used the voice from the original game. It’s an insult to your community.”
A few players also ran into a strange bug where the game would launch into the digital artbook if it was installed, requiring it to be completely removed. Even some of the positive reviews highlight this issue, along with frequent crashes during firefights.
"Quality Of A Fan Made Mod But The Dev Isn't A Fan"
Blight, who refunded the game after 6.5 hours, was one of many who noted the “bad performance,” pointing out how the mouse and keyboard input feels “delayed,” something that was corroborated in the comments and several other reviews.
Others point out that toggling motion blur off doesn’t seem to work, and that reload animations feel “unfinished.” The new third-person mode and prequel missions likewise drew flak for feeling half-baked, while the re-recorded voice lines and updated cutscenes are also proving to be disappointing.
“Underwhelming and unpolished,” said Tupina. “I am contributing to the Mixed review rating here because Mixed is exactly how I feel about it.”
Numerous players feel burned by the lack of split-screen co-op, a Halo staple present on console, but not PC. “There is absolutely zero reason this game should not have split-screen co-op,” reads one review. “It is literally where 90% of people’s nostalgia for this game comes from.”
Even if you play online, players warn that only the host can see cutscenes mid-mission, and that it’s “very buggy.”
Hypno Penguin sums up the sentiment among many of these reviews: “An insult to the original game.” Despite being single-player with a premium price point, countless found themselves unable to even boot up Halo: Campaign Evolved, and for those who stuck with it, they were rewarded with crashes, performance issues, bugs, and even allegations of AI voice acting.
To cap it all off, Halo: Campaign Evolved is Steam Deck verified, but by all accounts, it really shouldn’t be.
