Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth has restarted the eternal debate about whether Red XIII is a cat or a dog, despite his designer, Tetsuya Nomura, giving a pretty definitive answer some time ago.

One of the most exciting things about Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth (beyond it finally giving us an answer about how the Remake trilogy handles that scene) is that it lets us play as Red XIII after having introduced him as a non-playable party member in Remake. The spotlight being back on Nanaki has resurfaced an age-old debate among fans - is he a cat or a dog?

Ever since Final Fantasy 7 originally released, fans have been questioning whether Red XIII is a dog or a cat, as he's presented with qualities from both species. This is something that Rebirth does as well, never really giving a definitive answer as to whether he's more of a cat or a dog, which has fans once again debating which he is.

Over on Twitter, Cyber_Deku_Tree gives us just one example of many debates that have been going on over the past few weeks, noting that they always thought he was more dog-like than cat-like, but that it seems like more fans think he's a cat. Others pointed out that he's much more like a dog, as he howls at the moon and growls several times throughout Rebirth.

In truth, Rebirth doesn't ever really give us a definitive answer and leaves it vague, but in my opinion, he definitely seems more dog-coded this time around. The howling at the moon and growling are one thing, but one early side-quest has a farm owner treating him like he's a dog and calling him a "good boy" after giving him a treat. Which is true, obviously.

Barret also calls Nanaki a "lab rat dog" in Final Fantasy 7 Remake, which indicates he's a bit more dog-like in the remake universe.

Although Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth may not give us a definitive answer to the question, we actually already have one from Red XIII's creator, Tetsuya Nomura. As pointed out by IGN, Nomura once said that Red XIII is a "feline of sorts" while discussing how he came to be. If his own creator is referring to him as that, it definitely seems like he's meant to be more of a cat than a dog.
