How To Get A Pet
If you are a returning player and can't find a pet anywhere, you need to sleep once to get a dream. During this dream, you will be prompted to select the type of pet you want and its name, appearance, and gender. You can choose either a dog or a cat, depending on your preference. You can only have one pet at a time.
After you select your pet, it will arrive at your place the next day and make itself at home.
If you are a new player, you will get your pet on Spring 7 during the first year of the game.
How To Change Your Pet's Appearance

How To Use Pets
Your pets are more useful than simply roaming around your farm being as cute as they can be. You can assign various tasks to them, such as collecting wood, stone, or forageables. You can do that from the animals menu in the journal and select the button on the bottom-right to change their task.
You can only assign them one task at a time, so prioritize that depending on what you need. Your pet friends will return with the items during the evening. You will find them inside your house, and they will give you the items collected.
Your pets will not go out when it's raining, so you cannot assign them tasks on those days.
