Summary

  • Final Fantasy 14 fans are feral for Bakool Ja Ja, and they're not afraid to show it.
  • This has caught the attention of developers, who are completely shocked.
  • Yoshi-P says that the devs did not see this phenomenon coming at all.

Bakool Ja Ja has taken the Final Fantasy 14 playerbase by storm - but this certainly wasn't intentional. Commenting on the Dawntrail character's intense popularity, Naoki Yoshida, also known as Yoshi-P, says that the developers are stunned, not expecting this reaction from fans in the slightest.

This comes from multiple translations of Yoshi-P's Q&A at Japan Expo Paris 2024. Here, he was inevitably asked about the popularity of Bakool Ja Ja, making it clear that word of how he's captured the hearts of fans has spread back to the dev team. Hell, it's even spread to Bakool Ja Ja's voice actor, as it seems like everyone involved with the character's creation is unable to avoid the response from fans.

Yoshi-P On Bakool Ja Ja's Popularity: "Huh?"

“I would NEVER have guessed this," reads a translation of the Q&A, provided by Twitter user and content creator, aitaikimochi. "The entire dev team was like ‘huh?!’”

It's easy to see why the developers are so shocked. Bakool Ja Ja doesn't strike me as the kind of character that was designed to entice fans - although that's not to say that I don't get it. More that I think there are some people out there who are blissfully unaware that there are those of us that are into things like this. Well, I suppose they're not so unaware of it anymore, mind you.

As we covered last week, Bakool Ja Ja's popularity has taken on a life of its own. His actor, Javier Prusky, became aware of this interesting fanbase after he replied to an image of the character... being milked. As he politely said at the time, "This is going a different direction than I ever imagined tbh…".

Well, it looks like the Final Fantasy 14 developers would agree with you.

Square Enix's popular MMO, Final Fantasy 14: A Realm Reborn, has players step into the role of the Warrior of Light in the world of Eorzea. There, they find themselves testing their mettle against Primals, the Garlean Empire, the Ascians, and plenty of other threats.

This award-winning MMO now has multiple expansions to its name, with the most recent Endwalker expansion bringing the Hydaelyn/Zodiark arc to a close. Director and producer Yoshi-P has promised lots of plans for future content and the game has regular updates to keep players occupied.
