Summary

  • Emio: The Smiling Man is getting a three-part demo that will be gradually rolled out between now and the game's launch on August 29.
  • Part one of that demo, which includes the prologue and chapter one, is available now.
  • Chapter two will replace the first part if you have downloaded it, and then chapter three will replace that when it's available.

Nintendo got everyone talking earlier this year when it shared a teaser for an upcoming Switch game that appeared to be very un-Nintendo. Nothing more than a creepy person wearing a paper bag on their head. Countless theories followed and then Nintendo eventually revealed its upcoming horror game is called Emio: The Smiling Man, a new game in the Famicom Detective Club series. Something no one predicted as it's the first new installment in the series since 1989.

Whether that took the wind out of your sails or not after that mysterious tease, Nintendo is offering you the chance to try out The Smiling Man before it launches exclusively on Switch on August 29, 2024. This is no straightforward demo, though. The trial itself will feel like unraveling a mystery as Nintendo has split the demo into three parts, and the first part will be available to download and try right now.

The first demo includes The Smiling Man's prologue and then chapter one which is called The Urban Legend, presumably familiarising you with the mystery surrounding the game's killer. The trailer for the demo reveals them to be a man with a paper bag on his head with a face crudely drawn on it, a voice from under the bag promising to put a permanent smile on their victims' faces.

Chapter two will be available from 9 pm EST on Thursday, August 22, and is called Disappearance. Just me going out on a limb again, but some educated guesswork tells me that the chapter will begin with someone disappearing, and The Smiling Man being the main suspect. Chapter three, which goes live at 9 pm EST on August 27, has a more ambiguous name - The Language Of Flowers. If you download the first demo, it will be automatically replaced with the subsequent chapters as they become available.

Emio: The Smiling Man will launch two days after the third chapter is available to play for anyone with a Switch who wants to see if it's for them. A very different game from just about anything else on the platform, particularly when it comes to first party games. There's a lot of usual Nintendo fare to come between now and the end of the year, though. The Legend Of Zelda: Echoes Of Wisdom, Mario & Luigi Brothership, and Super Mario Party Jamboree make the next few months busy ones for the Switch despite the promise of an announcement about its successor.
