Ari Aster's latest horror flick Midsommar is a captivating slow-burn descent into broad daylight terror. The plot follows a young woman named Dani and her indifferent boyfriend Christian as they tag along with some friends on a summer trip to a quaint Swedish festival. But what first appears as a charming pastoral retreat quickly spirals into a living nightmare the deeper they go.

Aster directs the hell out of this thing, using the constant sunshine and picturesque locales to ratchet up a feeling of dreamlike unease that turns the typical horror formula on its head. The movie is a visual splendor too, with ornate ceremonial costumes and sets that are a real feast for the eyes, camouflaging the evil that lurks within this community.

The stellar cast is led by a raw and intense Florence Pugh as Dani, perfectly capturing the character's vulnerability and grief. She's supported by strong performances from the likes of Will Poulter and William Jackson Harper as Christian's oblivious buddies, while Jack Reynor is scarily good as the self-serving boyfriend.

The Nightmare Before Christmas is an animated musical by Tim Burton. It follows Jack Skellington, who is a legend in Halloween Town and an expert on the holiday. Yet, he longs for a change and shifts his focus to Christmas.

Main Genre Animation Powered by Expand Collapse Pros & Cons
  • Great animation
  • Fascinating narrative
  • Enjoyable songs
  • It's as much about Christmas as it is about Halloween

There is plenty of debate surrounding The Nightmare Before Christmas on whether it's more of a Halloween or Christmas movie. The story revolves more around Christmas, but the film has a more Halloween aesthetic. Either way, it's a brilliant animated musical.

As you'd expect for a title with Ted Burton's name involved, the animation is dark and unusual, which works well for a film where the main setting is called Halloween Town. The music is great, too, with This Is Halloween being the perfect song to get you in the mood for the spooky season.

Based on the series from the 1960s, The Addams Family tells the tale of the eccentric titular clan as they reconnect with someone claiming to be their long-lost relative. It's a unique and compelling dark comedy film.

Main Genre Comedy Powered by Expand Collapse Pros & Cons
  • Unique characters and premise
  • You don't need to see the TV series to understand this one
  • Interesting aesthetic
  • Will be a little too eccentric for some people

The most iconic families in fiction are typically a little strange. But they don't get more unusual than The Addams Family clan. They're eccentric and have a deep love for morbid things. And much of the comedy in the movie comes from how bizarre they are.

Despite their strangeness, they're a close family that lacks the dysfunction of more traditional ones. So, they make for a unique set of main characters, which allows The Addams Family movie to feel different than most others, including Halloween flicks.

This fantasy romance movie stars two sisters who come from a long line of witches. Every woman in the family has to deal with a curse where the men they love end up dead. The sisters want to abolish this curse.

Main Genre Fantasy Powered by Expand Collapse Pros & Cons
  • Different from the average rom-com
  • Two great leads in Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman
  • A bit cheesy at times

Halloween isn't typically associated with romance. Love stories are usually told at Christmas or Valentine's Day. Yet, Practical Magic shows that Halloween movies can have romance, too. Admittedly, its use of the genre is very different from what you see in the average Christmas movie.

After all, this movie includes a hefty amount of death and witchcraft. However, that is to its benefit as it makes it different from the average rom-com. The quality of the movie is also helped by the inclusion of the always-excellent Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman.

Scary Movie is a parody of horror. It pokes fun at many tropes and conventions of the genre. Scream is the main movie to be made fun of, as the lead group of teenagers tries to avoid being killed by a bumbling version of Ghostface.

Main Genre Comedy Powered by Expand Collapse Pros & Cons
  • Plenty of funny jokes
  • Some of the mockery is clever
  • Not every aspect of the movie has aged well

Parody movies used to be very common in the 2000s and early 2010s. Most of them, however, were completely hated. Scary Movie has a bit of a cult following, though. This is mainly because it's better than most in the genre.

Yes, it isn't very highbrow, but it's a great movie for people who like outrageous and silly comedy. It doesn't take itself seriously at all, nor does it provide any deeper message or lesson. The movie is just silly and makes the horror genre look silly, too, which is something you may want at Halloween.

The title of Monster House doesn't have a hidden meaning, nor is it some sort of metaphor. This movie is literally about a house that's a giant human-eating monster. A group of teens discover this, and they intend to stop the wooden beast.

Main Genre Animation Powered by Expand Collapse Pros & Cons
  • Creative idea to make the house the villain
  • Enjoyable for all ages
  • Some of the animation doesn't look as good as it did on release

Disney isn't responsible for every good animated movie. Monster House, for instance, had nothing to do with that company. And it's a fun and exciting animated movie for people of all ages.

The idea alone is worthy of praise. Haunted Houses are common in Halloween stories, but it's rare to see a house that is a literal monster. This leads to an original story and plenty of unique scenes. Plus, the movie also contains some strong comedy and decent animation.

In Beetlejuice, two recently deceased ghosts want to rid their home of its new occupants. Their efforts don't succeed, so they call on the eccentric Beetlejuice to help.

Main Genre Comedy Powered by Expand Collapse Pros & Cons
  • Captivating performance from Michael Keaton as the titular character
  • Wacky fun
  • Plenty of creative moments
  • Some of the visual effects don't hold up

Beetlejuice is the perfect example of a great horror movie that isn't scary. Admittedly, it is a little creepy at times, but not many people would call it a scary movie. Yet, it is still a wonderful film, mainly due to its titular character. Michael Keaton's Beetlejuice is charismatic and exciting.

It's hard not to be entertained by his antics throughout the comedy. The visual effects are less impressive by today's standards, but this movie isn't too serious anyway, so any wonky-looking effect doesn't hurt the overall appeal of the title.

At the start of Hocus Pocus, three witches are executed in Salem, Massachusetts. 300 years later, a teenager accidentally brings them back to life. Now reborn, they intend to get vengeance on the townspeople.

Main Genre Fantasy Powered by Expand Collapse Pros & Cons
  • The witches are compelling throughout
  • The zombie is entertaining
  • All three witches have a unique and memorable look
  • The regular humans are dull

Hocus Pocus is one of the most famous Halloween movies Hollywood has ever made. Despite not impressing the critics very much, it gets a lot of love from viewers and has gained a cult following over the years.

The reason why the movie is appreciated by many is due to the three main characters. The witches might be the villains of the story, but they're easily the most entertaining aspect of the film. The three of them are wacky, funny, and engaging. The trio alone makes this film worth watching.
