Elden Ring's crafting mechanic is something we haven't seen in previous FromSoftware titles. While the phrase 'crafting mechanic' sounds complex, it's pretty straightforward. You can easily play through the entire game without ever needing to get the crafting kit.

While it's certainly not mandatory, there are quite a few craftable items which will make your run a lot easier. You often don't even have to go too far out of your way to get the ingredients.

Updated July 21, 2024, by Andrew Scariati: Elden Ring's best crafting items received an important new addition in the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC. While most of the Elden Ring crafting items are purely optional, there's one new addition that you'll need to awaken and defeat a certain Furnace Golem during your journey.

11 Fire Pot

Recipe: None Required

Old reliable. Bane of closely gathered enemies and anything standing at a lower level. The Fire Pot is easy to make, with very common ingredients. They're quick to throw, will hit surprisingly hard, and even scale with strength, so you don't necessarily need to leave your grenades behind as you get into later areas.

If you're feeling especially devious, you can combine them with Oil Pots, which on hitting an enemy will increase the damage of the next fire attack thrown their way. Alternating between these two can let even the most unmagical Tarnished enjoy raining fire from the sky.

10 Furlcalling Finger Remedy

Recipe: None Required

The Furlcalling Finger Remedy might seem like rather an obvious choice, but it's self-evident for good reason. If you want to summon someone to help, or get your friends on board, you need one of these. You can find a few lying around, but Elden Ring being as it is, it's not that hard to run out. Fortunately, they're a very easy item to make.

Pick up a couple of Erdleaf Flowers, and you're good to go.

You don't even need a cookbook to get started, and the item opens up a whole world of jolly cooperation. Simply activate one, and it will reveal summon signs in the area.

9 Warming Stone

Recipe: Nomadic Warrior's Cookbook [19]

Crimson Tear Flasks are fast, convenient, and upgradeable. They've also got a finite amount of juice before you have to visit a Grace to restock. Sometimes you'll find yourself pushing forward into unknown territory with a dry flask and no Site of Grace in sight.

Alternatively, you may be cooperating and notice that your buddy is looking a bit beaten up, and has far fewer heals to play with. These kinds of situations are where the Warming Stone comes in. When thrown onto the ground, they emit a glow that restores your HP, and that of anyone standing around it.

Be wary though, that the healing aura applies to enemies too, so you won't be able to use it to turn into some regenerating Wolverine Tarnished, not unless you want the guy you're fighting to become Sabretooth.

8 Uplifting Aromatic

Recipe: Perfumer's Cookbook [1]

Your summons deserve your gratitude. The best way to show it to them is by cracking open an Uplifting Aromatic at the start of the fight. They require Silver Tear Husks which are not easy to come by until you dive into Nokron, but they're worth the wait.

The buff from the Aromatic will not only give both you and your allies an attack boost, but will also protect you from the first incoming hit. It will even protect your Spirit Ash Summons. Multiple summoned creatures all get buffed individually, so it's great if you want to swarm a boss with angry Greatshield Soldiers.

7 Giantsflame Fire Pot

Recipe: Armorer's Cookbook [7]

Unlike some of the other flaming missiles available to you, the Giantsflame Fire Pot uses a little bit of FP to throw, but the bigger boom is very much worth it.

The FP cost is low enough that you don't need to put a lot into Mind to be able to rain ruin on anyone you like.

The ingredients are also not too hard to come by. These need Ritual Pots rather than Cracked Pots, but the result is a spectacular bright red boom that can wreak absolute havoc on enemy groups, and even shorten the lifespan of quite a few bosses.

6 Pickled Fowl Foot

Recipe: Missionary's Cookbook [2] (Gold) | Missionary's Cookbook [3] (Silver)

Both the Gold and Silver Pickled Fowl Feet earn their place here because they're both equally useful for different reasons. If you don't mind victimizing the local Guillemots for Fowl Feet, these useful items can boost your Rune acquisition and chances of item drops respectively.

Gold is great for chasing that next level-up, whilst Silver can be invaluable if you're trying to farm a particular item with a frustratingly low drop rate. Both save you time that could be spent doing something more fun, like dying to Malenia again.

5 Crystal Darts

Recipe: Nomadic Warrior's Cookbook [11]

A bit of a dark horse in the Consumable world. Each dart does a small amount of magic damage, which can be useful, though where they shine is their hidden effect.

When they're thrown at construct enemies, they will build up to a point where the enemy freezes for a few seconds. The construct then goes berserk, attacking other close enemies. This applies to Imps, golems, and even Erdtree Burial Watchdogs. Watching three golems having a battle while you relax will never stop being funny.

4 Bloodboil Aromatic

Recipe: Perfumer's Cookbook [2]

Need some performance-enhancing consumables? Look no further than the Bloodboil Aromatic. Knocking back one of these will boost your attack, stamina, and damage resistance.

Unlike some other buffs out there, Bloodboil will remain active for an entire minute, giving you plenty of time to carve into a boss before having to down another one.

The damage buff is a little less against Tarnished phantoms, though still significant enough that it's worth considering for PvP. Most ingredients are reasonably common, though you may have to hunt a Land Octopus or two to replenish your stock.

3 Shield Grease

Recipe: Glintstone Craftsman's Cookbook [4]

Weapon Grease is a fairly simple item in principle, adding damage to weapons when applied. This can be very useful but quickly becomes obsolete if you pick up an infused weapon. However, another kind exists that can be extremely useful.

If you're into the sword-and-board play style, Shield Grease is well worth trying out.

This blue sludge, when applied to a shield, will increase its defense across the board. This is incredibly helpful if, for example, you have a high physical defense shield, but you find enemies breaking out magic or fire.

2 Hefty Furnace & Rot Pots

Recipe: Greater Potentate's Cookbook [2]

The Shadow of the Erdtree DLC added a new class of enemies to the fray: Furnace Golems, includinga dedicated Furnace Golem boss fight. The DLC also came with a new set of hefty pots you can craft using the Furnace Visage drops from the golems.

A Hefty Furnace Pot will create a whirlwind of flames that knocks enemies into the air, while a Hefty Rot Pot causes 400 Scarlet Rot buildup on impact.

Aside from their general use against enemies, the Hefty Furnace Pot can be used to awaken certain sleeping golems, like the one in Scadu Altus.
