BioWare has explained why Dragon Age: The Veilguard has taken "so long", pointing out that it had other games in development at the same time and that it "wanted to make sure it got this one right".
Although Dragon Age: The Veilguard finally looks like it's on the horizon to launch later in 2024, it's been a very long road getting to this point. Following Dragon Age: Inquisition's launch in 2014, the fourth Dragon Age game was originally announced all the way back in 2018 before being officially named Dreadwolf in 2022 and then finally re-emerging a few months ago as The Veilguard.

Posts 8That six-year gap between its initial untitled reveal and the most recent announcement at Summer Game Fest has been a bit of a marathon for fans of the series, who have wondered what was up with the long wait time. While the simple answer is that games take a lot longer to make than they used to, BioWare has tried to explain it further during a recent interview.
Dragon Age: The Veilguard Took So Long Because BioWare Wanted To Get It "Right"
During a recent interview with GamesRadar+, The Veilguard's creative director, John Epler, was asked about the big gap between Dragon Age 4's reveal and where it is now. In response, Epler said that BioWare has had several other projects in the work and because it wanted to get The Veilguard right, while also saying that it's the "best version" of the new Dragon Age.
"We had other projects going on at BioWare as well. We wanted to make sure we got this one right."
Creative performance director Ashley Barlow also commented on the wait, noting that BioWare started casting for it five years ago and that the team and talent have been working on it since then. Barlow says that it takes a "long time" to record 700 characters, with anywhere between 80,000 and 140,000 lines for all of the Rooks.
Considering that's just one character (albeit, multiple versions of one character), it does start to make sense why we've been waiting so long to see more of The Veilguard. That's not even taking into account the fact that the fourth Dragon Age game went through multiple different iterations and that BioWare has also been working on the next Mass Effect game, which seems to be in a very early state right now.
