Summary

  • The weddings in Disney movies are not just about the grand settings, but about the love and affection between the characters.
  • Even short films like Tangled Ever After can capture the grandeur and romance of a Disney wedding, especially after building a strong relationship in the preceding movie.
  • Disney weddings don't always revolve around the main characters; Wreck-It Ralph showcases the unexpected love story of Felix and Tamora and teaches important lessons about acceptance and learning from mistakes.

When someone thinks of an ideal wedding, the fantastical settings of Disney come to mind, and that’s no accident. Classical movies, like Cinderella or The Little Mermaid, set the foundations of what a perfect wedding should be, at least in the minds of countless children.

With so many years of renditions of perfect weddings, it might be hard to choose the best ones, yet we can’t forget that these celebrations are just part of a bigger story. The best ones are those that encapsulate the love and affection both characters developed for each other, getting us all into countless tears.

8 One Hundred And One Dalmatians

A Double Wedding With Man’s Best Friend

Close

Being one of the simplest weddings Disney has to offer, the one shown in One Hundred and One Dalmatians is still full of animated charm. Roger and Anita’s love is as genuine as it gets, and the intimacy of their ceremony makes that clear, yet they’re not why the movie makes it on the list.

The real kicker is that, once the camera pans out of the window, we see Pongo and Perdita going through similar motions as if the priest were talking to them as well. As the real protagonists of the movie, it’s their relationship the one you’re truly invested in, and this is a perfect way of giving the story a sendoff.

7 Tangled Ever After

Being Short Doesn’t Make It Any Less Sweet

Close

Being only a six-minute short film, Tangled Ever After still manages to show how grandiose a Disney wedding can be. The palace, the royalty, and the love oozing from the couple are more than we could ask for, but what makes it great is the movie that came before.

What makes 2010's Tangled so good is the way it sells the relationship between Rapunzel and Flynn, and by the end, you just want to see them be together. While they do, they hint at a wedding that was never shown, so when we were all invited to the ceremony in 2012's Tangled Ever After, it was already a special wedding even before watching it.

6 Wreck-It Ralph

Who Said It Had To Be The Main Character’s Wedding?

Close

Wreck-It Ralph has plenty of amazing characters, from the titular Ralph to the quirky Vanellope, but the focus here is on an unexpected couple found in Felix and Tamora. This is a story of a failed wedding when Tamora had her one interrupted by the attack of giant insect creatures that chewed up her to-be husband.

The wedding with Felix at the end is a closure of all that Tamora went through, from softening up to others to learning to love again. It’s a story about learning from your mistakes and accepting who you are, and that even if you’re from an action world, and he’s from an arcade one, love finds a way.

5 The Incredibles

This Time, The Wedding Starts It All

Close

The Incredibles is a superhero movie that gives us more originality on the subject than many things that come out today, and it was released in 2004. What sets the wedding of Elastigirl and Mr. Incredible apart from the others, is that it’s set on the day that makes the plot tick.

While the ceremony itself isn’t the catalyst for everything that happens after, it’s partially responsible; if Mr. Incredible wasn’t in such a rush to finish with his superhero persona, things might’ve been different. Still, the ceremony itself is great, with a private audience of their superhero friends and nods to the rest of the movie.

4 Up

Are You Crying Yet?

Close

Considered by many to be the ten saddest minutes in Disney history, the beginning of Up shows us from how Carl and Ellie met to when Ellie dies. With the wedding being in the middle of it all, you’d think it wouldn’t have much of a focus, but it’s very important for setting the characters.

In the wedding, you see Ellie taking initiative in the kiss, meaning that their roles remain much the same as a couple. You can also see their families, and how much they resemble their heritage, and of course, you believe in the love these two have for each other, which is what makes the following events so hard to watch.

3 Mulan II

A Wedding With Weight

Close

Mulan is an incredible classic in Disney history, following the titular character’s quest to prove herself and save China, and even though her relationship with Shang is established, the focus on that was saved for the sequel, with themes all about relationships and choosing your partner. While the princesses are vital in establishing the theme, it’s Mulan and Shang who carry the story.

The final wedding scene is a culmination of not only the themes shown in the movie but also of the lessons learned by the characters. Mulan and Shang learn that it’s their differences that make them grow stronger together, and Mushu learns to value their feelings by helping them overcome many political struggles, so it’s about letting go of your share of power to have more as a group.

2 Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End

An Action-Packed Celebration

Close

While many consider Captain Jack Sparrow to be the element that carries the franchise, it was the relationship between Will and Elizabeth that gave it a semblance of cohesion. During the first three movies, it’s these two characters that introduce you to the pirate world and its mythos, and you learn alongside them how to navigate the dangerous waters.

During the outstanding final confrontation of the movie (and considering their low odds of survival), Will proposes to Elizabeth as they sword fight against many enemies. She first questions the logic but understands that they might not survive, and asks Barbossa to marry them (since he’s the captain of the ship), which it’s as ridiculous as it’s charming, and a great representation of the saga overall.

1 The Princess And The Frog

As Magical As It Gets

Close

When people think about the best Disney weddings, they tend to be torn between the most magical and the most grandiose, unable to choose between the fantastic and the opulence. Fortunately, The Princess and the Frog exists, giving us the best of both worlds and with heavy plot significance too.

The initial wedding has Tiana and Naveen as frogs, accepting their fate as animals, but happy to be together. As opposed to the rest of the movie, they’re not looking to kiss to break any curse, they simply want to be together, so this is what breaks it in the end, making them human once more and letting them have the royal wedding they deserve.
