Summary

  • Assassin's Creed is known for taking place in various historical settings and time periods, including the American Revolution and Ancient Egypt.
  • With the series finally heading to Japan, fans have begun discussing which setting and time period should come next.
  • In a massive thread on Reddit, fans shared their wishes for the series, including a Cold War era AC title.

Since its initial debut in 2007, Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed franchise has taken players across a variety of historical locales and time periods. From the Third Crusade in the first Assassin's Creed title to the American Revolution of AC3 and Ancient Egypt of Origins, the series has established itself as a hub for exploring the history of the world as we know it.

In fact, its accuracy is so unmatched that the series has begun offering a Discovery mode, where players and even educators can tour through a specific setting. That said, with Assassin's Creed: Shadows releasing in November, the series has all but assuredly covered nearly every region and time period that fans had been requesting. Japan was chief among that list, and it'll finally come to fruition later this year, while Ancient Greece and the world of Vikings preceded things.

With that said, the series isn't going anywhere. Ubisoft still plans to continue things following Shadows, and is also simultaneously going to remake some of the older titles as well. So, what locations and time periods should be explored next? Well, Assassin's Creed fans have a lot of ideas, and they shared them online on Reddit.

The Next Assassin's Creed Should Cover...

Taking to Reddit, a couple hundred fans shared their ideas for the next Assassin's Creed, and the ideas are mostly outstanding. To start, one user opined that the Cold War should be the next AC setting. "It would be an interesting take to have the assassins as more modern-day spies," wrote the user. That idea was furthered by a separate user who suggested that the game should avoid combat altogether and focus solely on stealth.

Another user shared that the series should return to England to cover the Tudor period. Why? "Because the real history of that era was Game of Thrones wild," wrote the gamer. Two games have already taken place in England, so hope remains slim. But never say never.

One interesting consideration was California's Gold Rush period of the mid 1800s. The user who suggested the era said it would be a plot device for another Piece of Eden. With so many real-life people having flocked to California in search of treasure, having Eden be part of that would be an interesting wrinkle to it all.

A final consideration that was heavily suggested is an AC game in Prohibition-era America. Given that so many games that have adopted Prohibition as a backdrop have been Mafia-esque escapades, an Assassin's Creed game set within the timeframe would be a change of pace. It also would allow Ubisoft to involve early vehicles into the game without having AC become too much like Watch Dogs.

At the end of the day, the beauty of Assassin's Creed is that, based off its story and the neverending battle against the Templars, it can truly take place anywhere. More so, its gameplay is malleable enough to fit a different period without feeling too out of place. And with Japan finally getting its due, it'll be interesting to see what comes next.
