Sonic x Shadow Generations Confirmed, Teases Adventure 2 Levels

Sonic Generations is getting a remaster, titled Sonic x Shadow Generations. This was just unveiled with an announcement trailer at PlayStation's State of Play, giving us our first look at the next Sonic release. It also gives us a release window: Autumn 2024.
Check out the reveal trailer for Sonic x Shadow Generations below, featuring gameplay for Classic Sonic, Modern Sonic, and of course, Shadow-centric levels.
Since the trailer dropped, Sega has shed some more light on how Shadow will be implemented into this remaster. "Play as Shadow the Hedgehog in a brand-new story campaign featuring never-before-seen powers and abilities that prove why he’s known as the Ultimate Life Form," reads the game's description.
The Sonic and Shadow elements of the game are described as "two unique experiences", so this new campaign could really bolster Sonic Generations' original offerings. We can see references to Sonic Adventure 2 and Shadow the Hedgehog in the trailer, so this remaster is borrowing from the original games that put him on the map.
Sonic Generations launched all the way back in 2011. It was part of the Sonic series' 20th anniversary celebrations, marking the launch of the first game in 1991. Since it's such a perfect anniversary game, celebrating the different eras of the Sonic series, it's a little unexpected to see it get a re-release in 2024, but it's a welcome surprise nonetheless.

Hyped for its co-op and Chaos Emerald abilities, Sonic Superstars would be a better game without them.
PostsNow with Shadow along for the ride, Sonic x Shadow Generations will celebrate the fan-favourite anti-hero as well as the Blue Blur. Shadow has been notably absent from recent Sonic releases, particularly Sonic Frontiers after its new character updates, but it looks like that's finally about to change.
Lead Sonic director Morio Kishimoto has previously said that Frontiers represents the beginning of the third generation of Sonic, but this remaster will see the series take a step back into the second generation. With this in mind, it's likely that this remaster is here to bridge the gap between larger releases, since future Sonic games will probably borrow more from Frontiers' open zone gameplay, not the platforming levels of Sonic Generations et all.
It isn't the first time Sega has remastered an older game too. Even ignoring all of the retro game re-releases, we got Sonic Colors: Ultimate in 2021. This was met with mixed to average reviews by critics, with fans noticing bugs that were not present in the original release. Fingers crossed, it goes a little better this time around, particularly when we're getting some extra Shadow content thrown in there.
Sonic x Shadow Generations will launch this Autumn.

Mario Vs Donkey Kong is charming, but it falls too awkwardly between the puzzle and platform genre, at least in the opening stages.
