Summary

  • Civilization 6 and 7 to drop the 2K Launcher, addressing fan frustration since the game's launch in 2016.
  • The removal of the launcher in response to player feedback, enhancing user experience for both games.
  • Fans excited for Civilization 7 details at Gamescom and PAX West, including a gameplay showcase and developer panel.

There's little worse than booting up your favorite game, only to be met with a dozen different launchers expecting you to sign in to multiple different services, taking your data while they're at it.

Personally, I don't think I'd even notice they were gone.  Maybe they could be kept in as an optional setting for multiplayer, but in singleplayer my experience is that the AI never uses them, and they're too much of an investment to justify the player doing so.

Thankfully, this is something developers Fireaxis Games has noticed and is going to rectify with Civilization 6, and Civilization 7 when it launches later next year.

Civilization 6 And 7 To Drop The 2K Launcher

Shared in a note on Civilization 6's Steam store page, the team said, "Alongside Challenge 10 going live on August 14, the new update also removes the 2K Launcher from Sid Meier's Civilization VI on Steam. In addition, Sid Meier's Civilization VII will not use the 2K Launcher on PC."

The update, which is live now, has been met with delight from Civilization fans, who have been plagued with the issue since the game launched back in October 2016.

The news the launcher is being removed is the first piece of information we've received about Civilization 7 since it was revealed during Summer Game Fest in June. Thankfully, we won't have to wait too much longer for any further details.

The title is set to appear during Gamescom Opening Night Live, with Geoff Keighly revealing its debut gameplay trailer. Following that, developers Firaxis will host a "Gameplay Showcase," comprised of over 20 minutes of hands-on footage. The game will also be appearing at PAX West, with a developer panel sharing "new insights and behind-the-scenes anecdotes" from Civilization 7.
