Yesterday, we got our very first look at the Borderlands movie courtesy of People Magazine, showing off Cate Blanchett's Lilith, Kevin Heart's Roland, Florian Munteanu's Krieg, Jamie Lee Curtis' Tannis, Arian Greenblatt's Tiny Tina, and Jack Black's Claptrap. Now, nine years after being announced, we have our first trailer.

Borderlands continues to languish in post-production hell with no release date in sight, and Gearbox might be wondering if it can ever be successful
PostsIn the trailer, we see the vault, Marcus' van from the opening of the first game, raider vehicles, explosive gun fights, the group teaming up to fight bandits, Atlas soldiers, huge monsters, and Claptrap... crapping out lead. Naturally.
The story follows Lilith returning to her homeworld, the iconic Pandora, searching for Atlas' missing daughter. As with the games, she recruits a party to help her on this adventure, but Brick and Mordecai are absent from the cast.
Instead, we have Krieg and Tiny Tina taking their place. Joining them are Benjamin Byron Davis (Red Dead Redemption 2, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3) as Marcus, while Haley Bennet (The Magnificent Seven, The Girl on the Train) joins them as a brand-new character
The Borderlands movie was announced in 2015. To put that into perspective, it was announced four years before Borderlands 3 was released, seven years before Tiny Tina's Wonderlands and New Tales from the Borderlands, just a year after the Pre-Sequel and the first Tales from the Borderlands, and within the same year as The Handsome Collection. Simply put, it's been a long time coming.
It wrapped up filming in 20211 but reportedly got stuck in post-production hell. The years preceding weren't much kinder to the movie, either. In nearly ten years, it has gone through a reported ten writers to match. Craig Mazin, who you may know for his work on the Chernobyl series and HBO's adaptation of The Last of Us, even had his name taken off the movie, opting to use the pseudonym Joe Crombie. Deadpool director Tim Miller also took over from Hostel director Eli Roth for reshoots last year.
Despite the infamy and problems surrounding it, the Borderlands movie is finally releasing on August 9, later this year.

Even setting aside the long post-production, the things that make Borderlands distinct as a game are liabilities as a movie.
