The mystery being woven through Chapter 1 of The Rise of the Golden Idol is certainly deserving of the epithet. While you'd expect the cases to be related in some esoteric way, that way doesn't make itself readily clear to begin with, requiring some leaps of logic to be made before things are made obvious.

The second full case has you figuring out what happened at a construction site to cause the death of a very unlucky soul. This is the first case that has you solving more than simply the names of those involved and the series of events, making this a bit more exciting.

This guide was written using the Extended Demo of the game and will be checked and updated upon the game's full release.

There are eight people to identify in this case, with some being far easier than others.

  • The reporter has some easy identities to match up, and the men wearing suits also have some pretty damning clues on their persons.
  • When it comes to the construction workers, you may need to think logically about any clues to do with their jobs and also analyse their dialogues.
  • Working out which worker operates which vehicle is necessary to be able to use the foreman's list of jobs to figure out surnames.
  • Don't overthink the man in the pipe.

All Vehicle Solutions

This panel is best solved alongside the name panel, as they use many of the same clues.

  • One machine has a photo of its operator, making it the easiest to identity.
  • One machine has a mug with a name on it, let's assume the operator did not steal this mug.
  • There are four faces and three vehicles. Which person is least likely to operate a machine himself?
  • One of the vehicles is said to be broken by one of the construction workers. Any clue as to which one this might be?
  • As for the vehicles themselves, you simply need to examine them to figure out which one is which.

Solution

Ted Werter

Monty Totsky

Bill Jenkins

Excavator

Demolisher

All Event Solutions

This series of events is more difficult than those you've encountered previously. It will require some logical deductions about what could have resulted in this scene.

  • A key part of the story is figuring out which vehicle was used to cause this scene.
    • One of them is not in use. This simplifies matters somewhat.
    • A section of the pipe was broken and travelled upwards, not downwards. How could this happen?
  • There are two bodies here, and it should be easy to work out which order they were discovered in.

Solution

Monty Totsky used the demolisher on the sewage pipe. This resulted in the death of Joel Gregson.

Following this, the body of Luke Brown was found unexpectedly.
