Borderlands Movie Makes Just $30 Million On $150 Million Budget

Summary
- The Borderlands movie has ended its theatrical run with a box office total of just $30.9 million.
- Not only does that make it a major flop, but it also made less than Cats, Fan4stic, Morbius, and even Madame Web.
- You can rent the movie to watch at home now, but you can also just pick up Borderlands 2 for the same price.
Borderlands wasn't just a dud, it was a catastrophic failure. Gearbox's first step onto the silver screen went about as well as trying to snipe Rakk with a sawed-off shotgun, making a measly $30.9 million, just 20 percent of its $150 million budget (counting marketing).
Interestingly, its domestic versus international box office is pretty evenly split — it made $15.4 million in the States, and $15.5 million elsewhere.
As reported by Forbes, the star-studded Summer blockbuster released over a month ago on August 9, opening to $8.6 million in its first weekend. But on September 5 — its last day in theaters — it made only $3,682 across 178 screens.
To put into perspective just how big a flop Borderlands is, here are some other awful movies that made more money:
- Morbius - $167mil
- Madame Web - $100mil
- The Flash - $271mil
- Imaginary - $39mil
- Cats - $75mil
- Fan4stic - $167mil
- Moonfall - $67mil
Borderlands Didn't Last Long In Cinemas
Releasing to abysmal reviews (zero percent on Rotten Tomatoes!) with worsening word-of-mouth as the film became an unbearable meme, Borderlands was doomed from the start. Even the 15-year-old Coraline outperformed it during an anniversary re-release.
Given past reports of production hell, the PG-13 rating, Chernobyl and The Last of Us writer Craig Maizin asking for his name to be stripped from the credits, and the constant changing of direction, the response is hardly surprising. But that response sealed its fate, as Borderlands was available to stream on demand only 21 days after releasing in cinemas.

If even Uwe Boll is laughing at Borderlands, maybe it's time to move on.
Posts 2You can pay $19.99 for the privilege to rent the movie, or buy it outright digitally for $24.99. Alternatively, you could just buy Borderlands 2 for $19.99 on Steam — trust me, it's a much better deal.
