Ace Attorney: Apollo Justice is the fourth in the series and the first to star a defense lawyer who isn't Phoenix Wright. Naturally, this is quite the tone shift from previous entries, but the gameplay is largely kept the same - you're still dealing with the same wacky casts of characters.

Turnabout Trump is Apollo's first trial and also serves as a sort of tutorial to the trial system in the game. You won't have to do any investigation in this one - that comes later - but you will have to solve the mystery of the murder at hand.

The guide below covers the choices you'll need to make in your responses and cross-examinations and nothing else - we'll try to make this as spoiler-free as possible!

Cross-Examination: The Competition

At the beginning of this cross-examination, you will be offered a refresher course on the process. Take this if you wish.

The steps you'll need to follow are as follows:

  1. Press the second statement: "My real job is to take on interested customers over at the poker table."
  2. Press the third statement: "The room where we play and the competition in there are the club's main attractions."
  3. Press the fourth statement: "The rules are simple: we play a game of poker using two decks of cards."
  4. Press the new statement: "I plead silence regarding the murder. But I will say I never touched the murder weapon."

Cross-Examination: That Fateful Night

  1. Present Smith's Autopsy Report at the fifth statement: "That man flew at the victim, and is strangling him to death!"
  2. Present Crime Photo 2 at the third statement: "The victim, he plays whole time with hand on locket at his neck."

Cross-Examination: Serious Competition

  1. Press the secondstatement: "House chips come in two size: small and large."
  2. Choose to add the details about the chip values to the testimony when prompted.
  3. Present the Chip Photo at the thirdstatement: "The one who was winning... dah, it was the victim!"
  4. When prompted to explain the contradiction, say that both were right.

Cross-Examination: The Final Hand

  1. Press the thirdstatement: "If you look at both men's hands, cheat is more obvious."
  2. Present the Chip Photo at the new statement: "Mr. Smith's hand has three aces, and Mr. Wright's two. ...It is five aces in all."
  3. When prompted to pick a part of the photo to present, pick the victim's hand - the one on the upper right.
  4. When asked which hand you'd like to examine, pick the victim's hand.
  5. When examining the cards, turn them around so you can see the backs. Examine the blue card.
  6. When prompted, respond that the cards were swapped after the murder took place.
  7. When prompted, say that the card was swapped by a fourth person, someone else.

There will be a brief break after this cross-examination.

Cross-Examination: The Best Laid Traps

  1. Press the fourthstatement: "The next moment, Wright picked up the bottle and swung it!"
  2. Press harder when prompted.
  3. You'll be given a quick preview of the Perceive mechanic. When prompted, press the 'Perceive' button - the button for this will be shown at the bottom of the screen.
  4. When prompted, present the Deadly Bottle.
  5. Present Wright's Cell Phone at the newstatement: "He's the one who did it! I didn't let him out of my sight until the cops got there!"
  6. Present Kristoph Gavin'sprofile.
  7. When prompted, choose to hear Phoenix's testimony.

Cross-Examination: Appetite Before Murder

  1. Press the third statement: "When the 'trap' failed, Smith hit the waitress."
  2. After examining the Deadly Bottle and finding that it is empty, present the Deadly Bottle at the new statement: "I discovered the "trap" during the game, and disposed of the card in the bottle."
  3. Present Crime Photo 1 at the original fifth statement: "When I returned, he was dead, blood streaming from a cut on his forehead."

Make sure you present the right crime photo! You need to pick the one where Shadi still has his hat on.

There will be another short break after this cross-examination in which you obtain a crucial piece of evidence.

Cross-Examination: That Fateful Night

  1. Press the fifth statement: "A bald head, an unconscious girl... and Wright, holding a bottle in his hand."
  2. Present the Bloody Ace when prompted.
  3. You'll eventually be shown a blueprint of the room where it happened with four individuals' locations: the killer (K), the victim (V), the witness (W), and the elusive fourth person (2).
  4. When asked to point out whose location doesn't make sense, present the Victim's location.
  5. Follow the directions to interact with the chair.
  6. When asked to point out whose location doesn't make sense now, present the Killer's location.
  7. When asked to point out the location of the Killer now that the chair has moved, present the location at the top of the screen, over the cupboard.
  8. When asked to point out whose location doesn't make sense a third time, present the second witness's location (the 2).

That's the end of the cross-examination, but there are two more choices to be made.

  1. When asked to show evidence relating to the murder weapon and the fingerprints on it, present Olga's Photo.
  2. When asked to identify the 'magician's trick,' present theBloody Ace.

And with that, you've solved your first case of Ace Attorney: Apollo Justice!
